HERO CENTRAL August 7-11 Vacation Bible School

August 3/2Corinthians 4

If we gave this chapter a title it could be “Never give up on the gospel”. This comes out in the first verse. The gospel or good news is that we are saved from our sins and from an eternity in hell by faith in Jesus Christ. Faith alone in Christ alone. That is it. There is no earning it, working for it, or anything else for it. It is the most wonderful thing going. No other religion has it. Christianity has a corner market on salvation because Christianity is Jesus! What would we give up the Gospel for? There is nothing better. It would be like a person in a life raft in the middle of the ocean with food, water and companionship saying, “I think I will just swim away and see if I can find something better to save my life with”.

There is no other way to defeat the power of sin in our lives and all of its evil effects on our lives. There is no other way to heaven, none!

John 14:6 (NLT) — 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

Verse 2 > we may be tempted to believe something else but Never give up on the gospel!

Verses 3-5 > Satan my try to blind us to the truth and there may be times we don’t seem to see our way clearly or feel saved, but Never give up on the gospel!

Verses 6-7 > even in our weakest moment when we feel really vulnerable and fragile, Never give up on the gospel!

Verses 8-12 > when life becomes unbearable and it seems like we can’t go on someone else will be strengthened by what they see in us if we Never give up on the gospel!

Verse 13 > everyday preach the gospel to yourself and by doing that you will Never give up on the gospel!

Verses 14-16 > Our bodies may wear down but our spirit will not because we know the future and we have determined that we will Never give up on the gospel!

Verse 17 > by not giving up on the gospel we begin to realize that our troubles work for us not against us. They increase our faith and produce endurance and strength of character. We become well known in heaven and we bring glory to God. Never give up on the gospel!

Romans 5:3–5 (NLT) — 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

Verse 18 > Don’t fixate on the trouble. Look to the one who can bring us through the trouble intact. What you dwell on the longesst becomes the strongest. Never give up on the gospel it lasts forever!

  1. Mark Gundersen says:

Remember that even the super Christians like Paul considered themselves fragile jars holding God’s light. We will suffer setbacks and other trials that cause cracks on our armour bur this releases the power of God to strengthen us and by our perserverence inspire others. This illustration does not contradict the sermon on the mount in Matthew where Jesus talks about not covering the light of God with a jar but putting it on a stand because Paul is illustrating our weakness but that God can still use us. So now when someone calls you a crackpot say thanks and ask if they can see Jesus better because of it.
