1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) — 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

In our memory verse Paul says that ‘God is faithful’. We must believe this in order for the rest of this verse to give us any hope of standing firm against temptation. On our own we will not be able to defeat temptation very often but if God is on our side showing us the way out and giving us the strength to endure we will not be ruled by temptation.

Faithful means that someone is dependable and reliable. You can expect that person to do what they say they will do. People that have service businesses such as painting, car repair, interior decorating, photography etc. will usually be able to give you references of people that they have done work for so that you can contact these people and ask if they were pleased with the service.

A number of years ago we were having issues with flooding in our basement. Anytime we had a significant amount of rain our basement floor would be covered with water. I tried to make certain corrections but to no avail. Finally we contacted a business that specialized in keeping basements dry. They would trench around the inside of the basement and install sump pumps so the that the water would be drained to the pump and then be pumped outside. The owner gave me the contact number of a couple of people in our neighborhood that had their basements done so that we could go over and talk to the people and see the work he had done. Cleo and I did that and that is what sold us on hiring this company. We ended up hiring the company. They were faithful and our basement has been dry for many years.

The bible is God’s reference to his faithfulness. Noah would tell you that God was faithful to rescue him and his family from the flood. Abraham would tell you that God was faithful to give him the son he promised even though Abe wa a 100 years old. Moses would tell you that God was faithful to rescue Israel from Egypt and then provide for them in the wilderness. Joseph would tell you that God was faithful to bring about seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. Gideon would tell you that God was faithful to help him defeat the thousands of Midianites with only 300 men using torches and horns.

Daniel would tell you that God was faithful to deliver him from the Lions den. Jonah would tell you that God was faithful to save the Ninevites. Mary would tell you that God was faithful to his promise when he said through Isaiah that a virgin will give to the savior of the world. And that he would be called Jesus. The Apostle Paul would tell you that God was faithful to save him the ‘chief of sinners’. God said that Israel would become a nation again. And in May of 1948 they again became a nation.

Now if you are a Christian you can tell others that God was faithful to save you from your sins. 1John 1:9 If we confess our sins God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God has all the references that we will ever need to bear witness that he is faithful.

Temptation doesn’t seem so intimidating now does it?
