January 14/Matthew 9

Verses 1-8

Chapter 8 was actioned packed and it doesn’t settle down as Chapter 9 opens up. Jesus is at it again when it comes to healing and forgiving. Remember that our bible says the Jesus is the same yesterday today and forever > Hebrews 13:8. Well just because he went to heaven it doesn’t mean that he has quit healing or forgiving. His power isn’t any less just because he isn’t here physically. If any thing his power would be on the increase if that were possible because in heaven he sits in the place power at the right hand of the Father.

So what I’m saying is we should always come expecting Jesus to continue to heal and forgive. No person’s body is too difficult for Jesus to heal and no sin can stump him in the forgiveness department. So lets pray for everybody that we can for healing and for the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus said that he could see their faith. I believe this is the same group of friends talked about in Luke 5 who broke up the roof of a house and lowered friend down in front of Jesus. They came expecting Jesus to heal and Jesus didn’t disappoint them. In fact Jesus did one better and forgave the man’s sins! He healed is body and his soul! Let Jesus see your faith. Come to your daily bible reading expecting learn, expecting to get answers, expecting to increase your faith, expecting to find a verse to pray, expecting to be filled with joy and peace. Expectancy is faith in action!! God rewards faith.

Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) — 6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.

Jesus’ miracles proved that he is God and that he could and will forgive sins. I laughed when the religious teachers said, “Does he think he is God?” Duh! He doesn’t think he is he knows he is and if you religious guys had any smarts you would think so to! But I guess we have a whole world full of people today who don’t believe Jesus is God. Our lifestyles need to image a living Jesus!

Which was easier for Jesus to say, “Stand up and walk or your sins are forgiven?” It was easy for Jesus to say ‘stand up and walk’. His words healed the man. But to forgive sins Jesus had to die; not so easy. I am so grateful that Jesus wasn’t into ‘easy’ aren’t you?

I pray that as you read your bible on this daily reading plan that you would be like the people in verse 8 who were filled with the fear of the Lord. That you would take God seriously, hold his opinion above your own, that you would love him more than anything else and show it by obeying what you read; and that you would shout out praises as the Holy Spirit gives you understanding of words you are reading.

Just a short comment on verse 17. The old wineskin was the old way of approaching God. An animal had to be sacrificed often for the forgiveness of sins. We now approach God through the shed blood of Jesus. He was a once and for all sacrifice. When we confess our sins he forgives us. We now live under his grace and not the law of Moses. We can come boldly to God any time we want and we can receive grace and mercy to help in time of need! see Hebrews 4:16.

Also he will baptize us with the Holy Spirit if we will but ask Him! Wow to be empowered with the same Holy Spirit as Jesus. Now that would burst and old dry brittle wineskin! See Acts 1:8

  1. Mark Gundersen says

Jesus wants us to take an honest look at ourselves and admit we are sinners that need his mercy and foregiveness. He is not looking fit that attitude of most of the pharacies and sadducees that were self righteous and felt they did not need more foregiveness than that achieved by the sacrifices in the temple.
