February 16/ Mark 4

Verses 1-20 > for a commentary on these verses listen to the sermon I preached on February 14 two days ago.

Verses 21-23 > Jesus is the Light of the World and he will not be hidden. We shouldn’t hide him either. We are to let our lights shine by imitating the character of Jesus, so that people will see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven. People need to know that what we say, how we say it and what we do and with the attitude we do it is all because Jesus changed our lives!

Verses 26-29 > Jesus is saying that we need to keep planting the word of God, which is seed in our hearts. Read the Bible, study it, memorize scripture and put it into practice. If we do this day after day it will bear fruit in our lives. Just like the farmer who really doesn’t know how the seed planted slowly but surely turns into a crop; we don’t know how the word changes us but little by little it does! After awhile we notice and other people notice that we are changed!

Colossians 1:6 (NLT) — 6 This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God’s wonderful grace.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NLT) — 13 Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.

Verses 35-41 > Faith in Jesus gets rid of fear of circumstances. Jesus said they would cross to the other side but the disciples forgot he said that or maybe they just didn’t pick up on it. We need to stay in our bibles so we know what Jesus is saying. We need to hide the word in our hearts.

When Jesus is in your boat(life) you won’t sink!

  1. Mark Gundersen says:

Jesus gave all his lessons in parables which he latter explained to his disciples. He said this fulfilled the prophecy that people woud hear without listening and see without discerning. This did not mean that noone who heard the parable would not understand but that some would not. Even the disciples who got it explained to them did not catch on all the time. It reminds us to be vigilant in what we see and hear to catch the meaning and internalize it.
