February 17/Mark 5

As we read the two stories in this chapter let the fact that Jesus has authority and power over demons, sickness and death strengthen your faith in Jesus today. Remember he left his authority with us!

Verses 1-20 > Healing the demon possessed man. I like those words, ‘Jesus climbed out of the boat’. I guess with the demoniac running around it would have been safer to just stay in the boat and get off someplace else. Some times to bring Jesus to people who really need him we have to climb out of the boat. What I mean by that is we need to go where we know that people need Jesus. Sometimes we can get locked into our own little circle of friends where our faith is never challenged or our views critized. We need to take a risk and do something different to shake up our routine. For example: I joined Anytime Fitness partly so I could meet a different clientel of people. I also recently joined the Fergus Falls rifle and pistol club for the same reason. I then pray that I will have opportunities to talk about Jesus.

Another way to get out of the boat is to let people at work know that you are a Christian. This will cause them to watch you, question you, make fun of you, persecute you or maybe even respect you; all of these things will be opportunities for you to talk about your relationship with Jesus and tell them why you believe what you believe.

Another way to get out of the boat is to model Jesus’ character before your family and unsaved friends. Too many times we waste this opportunity by living no different than our unsaved friends or unsaved family members. If your spouse wasn’t a Christian would she want to be based on the way that you treat her or him? Get out of the boat!

And another way to get out of the boat is in church. Do people at church know that you are a Christian by the way you give of your, excuse me, God’s money? Do they know you are a Christian by the way you volunteer for the lowliest of tasks: nursery, toddlers, clean up, snow shoveling, meeting new people, etc.? Do they know you are a Christian by the your enthusiastic worship, by your attentiveness to the messages, by the way you talk about the leadership, by the fact that they have never heard you complain or talk about someone behind their back? Get out of the boat and bring Jesus with you to Church! There are proabably unsaved people at church checking us out!

If Jesus wouldn’t have gotten out of the boat the man would have remained demon possessed. This man was a perfect picture of life without Jesus. He was in the cemetery a place of death and slowly killing himself with no hope. Without Jesus it doesn’t matter how prosperous a person looks that person is in a place of death and no hope. Jesus got the man out of the cemetery and gave him a new life with a new hope! When you see someone that doesn’t know Jesus picture them wandering in a cemetery. It is our job to get out of the boat and lead them out by bringing Jesus to them with our words and actions.

Satan and his demons can make sin look really attractive and fulfilling but even pigs can see through glitter, they would rather drown than live with Satan and his demons!

We have the authority Jesus had. We don’t have to fearfully stay in the boat. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and lead out of the boat and empower you to help bring someone out of the cemetery!

Matthew 28:18–20 (NLT) — 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Be Inspired Hilltop!

  1. Mark Gundersen says:

In both of these episodes we see how Jesus deals with people seen as unclean by the law. The demon possessed man lived in a graveyard, next to a pig farm with 2000 unclean spirits. Jesus cleaned him of the demons, released him from the graveyard and sent him back into the community instead of being forced to be separated due to uncleanness. The second episode has Jesus going to the hose of a religious leader to heal his daughter when he is touched by a woman unclean for years due to bleeding. She wa healed also bringing her back into community. In both cases Jesus’s compassion made him come in contact with uncleanness and bring cleanness and the ability to be able to worship God. This shows that there is nothing in your life that will keep Jesus from bringing you back into relation with man and God.

  2. Shawna Zelinsky says:

When Jesus went to get back into the boat the man begged to get In with Jesus but Jesus told him to go tell his family how much the Lord had done for him. (to get out of the boat). Maybe it’s just best to never get in the boat.
