February 2/Matthew 22

Verses 1-14 > The invitation to receive Jesus has gone out to the whole world >

John 3:16 (NLT) — 16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Unfortunately many refuse the invitation. Some try to get in by their own means; being good, going to church, not committing major crimes etc. However there is only one way to heaven and that is by faith in Jesus. When we believe in Jesus our sins are forgiven we are clothed with a robe of righteousness, our wedding garment. This guy was not in the proper garment because he hadn’t believed in Jesus otherwise he would have had the robe of righteousness.

Isaiah 61:10 (NLT) — 10 I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding or a bride with her jewels.

Verses 15-20 > Roman Caesar’s set themselves up as God. If Jesus says to pay taxes the Jewish people would hate him. If he says not to pay taxes Roman soldiers would kill him. You can’t fool Jesus. The money was stamped with Caesar’s image so Jesus said to give it to him. However we are stamped with the image of God and we are to give ourselves to God! How cool is that?

Verses 23-33 > We learn at least three things here. 1. You can’t stump Jesus. 2. There is no marrying in heaven. We are all the bride of Christ. 3. There is a resurrection otherwise God would have said, “I was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” However he said, “I am.” Meaning they are alive!

Verses 34-46 > Jesus is God. He always has been and always will be. Even David knew this way before Jesus came in the flesh.

  1. Mark Gundersen says

Jesus made it simple for us. The whole of God’s law can be stated in loving and honoring God, and God’s sabeth day, and loving / treating others as we would be loved / treated. This summarized the Ten Commandments, the laws regarding sacrifices, and the sabeth laws. The rest of the laws regarding food and hygiene were to keep his people healthy.

  2. Mary Anne Frank says

One of the lessons I am learning in reading through Matthew is that it is always okay to ask Jesus hard questions or even simple questions IF my heart is right. He knew the heart of each person that came to Him with questions. I can always trust Him to welcome my questions and give me answers if my heart is to know Him more…. As Paul says in Philippians…” That I may know you and the power of your resurrection”.
