April 14/ John 6

I would entitle this chapter, “You are What you Eat”.

Verses 1-21 > The people just fed themselves on the physical food that Jesus provided and they got filled up. How ever they didn’t feed themselves on the spiritual food of Jesus’ teachings or his miracles. Otherwise they wouldn’t have been trying to make him a king they would have realized that instead of a king they needed a priest to make things right with them and God. Jesus was the priest they needed but they didn’t realize it because they hadn’t been feeding the spirit within them on the teaching of Jesus. They also would have realized that he is God and the proper response would have been to fall on their knees before him and worship.

Does what your eating cause you to fall on your knees and worship God?

Philip indicated that he was only feeding on physical food also because when Jesus asked him to feed the people his thoughts went right to money and how much they would need to pull this off. Had Philip been feeding on the spiritual food of Jesus’ teaching and miracles he could have said, “I don’t know Lord but when they ran out of wine at that wedding in Cana you turned the water into wine. I guess I’ll just trust you to figure this one out!”

Everyday in life things will come along to test our faith in the Lord. How we handle the test will depend upon what we have been feeding on. Spiritual food, feeding on the word of God our bibles, will cause us to trust the Lord and physical food, burgers and fries and self help books, will cause us to try to solve things on our own or panic!
Verses 22-56 > The crowds came back the next day still looking for physical food so Jesus gives them lesson on eating.
Verse 27 > These people used their energy to row boats to get to Jesus. They wanted the blessings of the miracles but not the blessing of having a personal heart felt relationship with Jesus. For many people their energy is used up in making a living, raising children and pursuing pleasurable things; in other words eating physical food. There is no energy left to get to know Jesus by feeding on his word, worshiping him and living in obedience to him > this is spiritual food. No energy left to love him. No energy left to put him first. Energy spent on making a living and being content and well off will be energy wasted at the end of life. Energy spent on pursuing a relationship with Jesus will result in eternal life.
Philippians 3:19 (NLT) — 19 They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

When they still didn’t get it Jesus in a nut shell said, “I am the food you need to be devouring.” As we eat food it is assimilated into our bodies and our bodies use all the nutrients to grow and stay healthy. Jesus telling them and us that he is the bread of life and if we will assimilate him (his word) into our lives we will grow up spiritually and be able to handle what comes down the highway of life. Because he is the living word of God we must read the scriptures and meditate on them so we get that word into us and let it come out in our daily living. Eating = believing and drinking = obeying. That is how Jesus is assimilated into our lives.1 Peter 2:1–2 (NKJV) — 1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

Job 23:12 (NLT) — 12 I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food.

Jeremiah 15:16 (NLT) — 16 When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

Psalm 119:103 (NLT) — 103 How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.

Ezekiel 3:1 (NLT) — 1 The voice said to me, “Son of man, eat what I am giving you—eat this scroll! Then go and give its message to the people of Israel.”

Verses 60-71 > Once you eat the word of God and assimilate it into your life you won’t leave Jesus you will believe n him and have a message to give to other people; all because you are filled up on spiritual food. Truly you are what you eat!

  1. Mark Gundersen says:

This chapter looks forward to the last supper where communion was instituted and back to Jesus’s temptation where he stated that man does no live on bread alone but every word that comes from the mouth of God. What is unfortunate was how many people fell away when Jesus said this. Jesus’s question to the 12 also looks forward to his betrayal. So are you a follower for the bread and circuses or for the bread of life and living water?

  2. Nancy Symens says:

Vs 63 tells us that we need more than our human understanding of the Word to interpret it more fully, we need the Holy Spirit. This is so true. In our society today there is such an emphasis on human knowledge and that human knowledge = power. THis is so sad, we are so deceived. Lord open our eyes to your truth and our need of the Holy Spirit to teach us your living word.
