April 4/Luke 22

If you have ever wondered if God is truly sovereign, in other words can God work out all things for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose, wonder no more! The answer is in the first six verses in this chapter.

Verses 1-6 > The Jews were getting ready to celebrate the Passover in which they would remember the time God delivered their ancestors from being slaves in Egypt. You can read the story in the book of Exodus. God certainly showed himself sovereign to the Pharaoh of Egypt with all of the plagues he brought on Egypt because Pharaoh was unable to stop them. The final act to show that God was sovereign was when he told Pharaoh he would kill every first born son and every first born of all the livestock in Egypt. To keep the death angel away from Israel God had each family kill an unblemished lamb, drain its blood and smear the blood over the whole frame of the door. When the angel of death saw the blood he would pass over and not kill the first born son. And of course being God is sovereign it all happened as he said. See Exodus 11.

That was then and this is now. Sometimes life has a way of causing us to doubt God’s sovereignty so that is why we have Luke 22:1-6. At the very time the lambs were being chosen for the Passover Celebration God had already chosen his Lamb, His son, to be sacrificed for us. When we believe in Jesus His blood would wash away our sin and we would be delivered from being slaves to Satan and be free to live for our Lord Jesus just like Israel was free from Egypt!

At the very time the lambs were being slaughtered and their blood shed Jesus was being slaughtered and his blood shed for us on the cross! So in verses 1-6 not knowing that they were fitting into God’s sovereign plan the priests, religious leaders, Judas, and Satan plotted to kill the lamb of God which was all part of God’s plan to work all things together for our good! So the next time you doubt that God is in control and you wonder if things will work out for good read Luke 22 to see how things worked according to God’s plan. This plan gives teeth to:

Romans 8:28 (NLT) — 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

We know because of Luke 22.!

  1. Mark Gundersen says

In this chapter we see the attitude of Israel turn. Prior to this the disciples could go out to do the work of God carrying nothing but the clothes they were wearing, but now they are advised to go out armed and prepared. We also see the results of Satan testing 2 of the disciples. Judus fails and Peter fails at first but will pass the test after the resserection. There is also a perversion of the passing of the peace when Judus kisses Jesus in the garden. Look to this chapter for instruction to pass your tests.

Good insight on the attitude change Dr. Mark! I believe we live in a world today where the mood has changed for the worse regarding Jesus and his followers.
