May 11/Acts 4

You will see in this chapter that Peter and John respond to trouble fully believing that Jesus is alive and that he is the answer to all of life. The church also lives as if Jesus is alive.

Verse 1 > If you don’t like confrontation don’t live for or speak for Jesus.

Verse 2 > The truth about Jesus more times than not will have a disturbing effect on people. Disturb them anyway.

Verse 3 > The ones who where really in jail were the people who arrested Peter and John. They were confined to their own selfish and sinful ways. Pastor Jeremy said in one of his sermons that, “True freedom is being able to choose the actions that will ultimately lead to the best consequences for you.” The consequences for these leaders will be hell if they don’t yield to Jesus.

Verse 4 > The church has always experienced its best growth during persecution. So do you want to pray for church growth:)

Verse 11 > You can never go wrong by building your life on Jesus and his word. Millions may reject but let us not make the same mistake.

Matthew 7:24–27 (NLT) — 24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

Verse 12 > In spite of what you hear nowadays there really is only one way to the top. It doesn’t matter who is saying it, how long they are allowed to say and how loud they say it, the only way to eternal life in heaven is believing in Jesus. That’s it!

John 14:6 (NLT) — 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

Verse 13 > When I was a little boy my mom said, “Daniel I see you have been with the cookie jar!” She knew this because I had crumbs and chocolate chips stains on the side of my mouth. I pray that I will be recognized as having been with Jesus. That my life will have taken on his boldness and his character and demeanor. Holy Spirit stain me his love and kindness.

Verse 17 > Satan had really blinded these guys to the truth didn’t he. They had all the facts but it didn’t lead them to the truth.

2 Corinthians 4:3–4 (NLT) — 3 If the Good News we preach is hidden behind a veil, it is hidden only from people who are perishing. 4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

Verse 19 > What do you think. Would God want you to obey him or man? Are you obeying God?

Verse 24 > Here we have it again, the baby church praying. I believe they took prayer seriously because they took God seriously and they knew that he was seriously concerned about them. Teach your children to pray from early on. The sooner the better. Make it natural for them to go to God. Let them see this as a natural response in your life and they will follow because little kids love to imitate their parents. Listen to you little children talk and you will hear then using the same words you do. Scary isn’t it! They don’t miss anything. These people were praying what they heard from the Old Testament and from Jesus. You can’t go wrong by praying he word.

Verse 26 > With this ‘gender thing’ we are shaking our fists in the face of God and daring him to do something about it.

Genesis 1:27 (NLT) — 27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Verse 28 > This has always been a mystery to me > God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibilty. God planned the death of Jesus and yet man is held accountable. No person comes to Jesus unless the Father draws them and yet man will stand before God to give an account for wha the did with Jesus. So I am yielding my life to Him and trusting him with the outcome.

Proverbs 20:24 (NLT) — 24 The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?

Verse 31 > Heaven gets excited when we pray!

Verse 32 – 37 > One of the hardest things to teach young children is to share. But here we have the baby church sharing. They shared enough so that there was not one needy person among them. What was the secret? Being filled with the Holy Spirit. Right from the get go they relied on the Holy Spirit and they had fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

How is your generosity? Is it bordering on the stingy side. Do you have to research every thing about a person before you can give? Do you find yourself more often than not saying something like, “If they didn’t smoke they would have money, or they eat out too much etc.” Those things may be true but how is your fellowship with the Holy Spirit?

The believers were filled with the Holy Spirit in chapter 2 and then we’re refilled this chapter when they needed it. The Holy Spirit will always help to see God’s plan carried out.
