August 4/2Corinthians 5

Paul continues to encourage the believers even though they are getting older and times are tougher.

Verses 1-3 > We are getting older but all that means is that we are getting closer to receiving our new bodies and our new home in heaven! yea!

Verse 4 > Some people put maintenance free siding on their homes because they get tired of the up keep associated with scraping and painting. These bodies that we live in now take a lot of up keep.  Sometimes we even have to replace parts! O for the day when I get a maintenance free body! When we saw Jesus after the resurrection we got a glimpse of the bodies we are going to have and we long to have them now! Patience Hilltop!

Verse 5 > The Holy Spirit keeps us patient now and looking ahead so we don’t get too attached to this life. Many are afraid to die but seriously do you want to live in this body and this world forever?

Verses 6-8 > Knowing what we know about the future we don’t let the present conditions get us down. Or do we? We are always of good cheer. Aren’t we? We wear smiles instead of frowns. Don’t we? We face each new day with rejoicing in the Lord. Can we? Because of what we believe about the future what we see happening now doesn’t cause us to despair. Right? We take the ruts in the road an the rocks on the path in stride. Don’t we? Well I guess most days we do:)

Verses 9-10 > the main thing for us in this life is to live to please Jesus. It is not to amass things and live in comfort. When we stand before the Lord we want to have a good review. Knowing that we will be judged keeps us on our toes. It give us purpose and with the power of the Holy Spirit we can excel still more!

Verses 11-12 > We actually love you and care about you. We are not just nice to your face as some are because they want something. We sincerely want the best for you in Christ. We need to say that to each other at Hilltop. Lets make the new people feel loved and cared for. Lets make all of us feel loved and cared for.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to make our people feel loved and cared for?

Verses 13-15 > God’s love causes us to be crazy for him and serious about you.  His love has a hand in everything we do. I want that to be true about my life, you?

Verses 16-21 > Because of the work Christ has done in our hearts we don’t evaluate people any more by what they have or how they look or what their position in life is. We used to judge Christ that way too by saying along with other people, “He is just the son of a carpenter, his mother had him out of wedlock, he doesn’t have a degree, he sure likes to party a lot and he hangs out with the wrong crowd etc.”  We know better now. We know that Jesus truly is God!

We also know that those who belong to Jesus have become new persons regardless of their status in this life. The old life is gone and a new life has begun.  We can now be right with each other and look at each other with new eyes; eyes that look for the best in each other! This all happened because Christ brought us back to God by going to the cross and canceling our sin, the very thing that separated us from God and kept us from receiving His new life in us.
We are out there telling people how they can be made right with God by believing in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins. God no longer counts our sins against us because Jesus took all of our sin away on the cross! Because our record is clean we can now represent Jesus to people. Our message is, “Come back to God!”

Verse 21 is one of my favorite verses in the Bible! God put the wrong on Christ so we could be right with God! It almost seems too good to be true but in this case it is true because God cannot lie.

Hebrews 6:18 (NLT) — 18 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

Be Inspired Hilltop!

  1. Mark Gundersen says:

The important thing to remember when presenting “your” testimony is that you are talking about another person. The before person has died and is gone and you are a new person. Paul acknowledges his old life and the imperfections still present in his new life but reminds everyone that is no longer him. Walk in your new life and do not beat yourself up over your old life.
