October 25/Hebrews 8

Verses 1-2 > Jesus ministers to us from heaven through the Holy Spirit who lives in us. The throne room of God was not made by human hands. Whatever man has touched he has spoiled. There is nothing man-made in heaven. There isn’t anything in heaven that has been spoiled. So what ever we need from Jesus we get it fresh from Jesus through the Holy Spirit; untouched by human hands!

Philippians 4:6 (NLT) — 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Verses 3-5 > What ever Jesus sends our way is the real thing. It is not generic, a knockoff, a second, or without any substance like a shadow. We get genuine peace and joy from Jesus where it has originated in heaven!

Verses 6-7 > Coaches get fired when they don’t win. The old covenant wasn’t a winner so it was fired!

Verses 8-10 > An inner change takes place when we are touched in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We now have a desire to live for the Lord. The old covenant could not facilitate this inner change.

Romans 2:29 (NLT) — 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people.

2 Timothy 2:25 (NLT) — 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth.

Verse 11 > The Holy Spirit living within us nudges us in the right direction. I don’t need someone telling me to go to church, study my bible, be kind to one another; the Holy Spirit whispers these things to my spirit already and I just walk in obedience to his voice. The first century Christians were some of the most radical life changing Christians ever and they didn’t have the New Testament, but what they had was the Holy Spirit!

Acts 2:42–47 (NLT) — 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Verse 12 > The Law could not promise a total forgiveness of sins.

Hebrews 10:1–3 (NLT) — 1 The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship. 2 If they could have provided perfect cleansing, the sacrifices would have stopped, for the worshipers would have been purified once for all time, and their feelings of guilt would have disappeared. 3 But instead, those sacrifices actually reminded them of their sins year after year.
Hebrews 10:18 (NLT) — 18 And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.

Every time they brought a sacrifice under the old covenant it reminded them of their sins. Kind of like a sibling or a spouse that keeps throwing the past in our faces! Thank you Lord for the New Covenant. Once our sins have been forgiven God will never ever hold our sins against us anymore! Never ever will he throw them back in our face. He just throws them away never to be recycled!
Verse 13 > Our New Covenant will never get old and it will never disappear! There is no shelf life on it.

  1. Mark Gundersen says:

Instead of writing his law on tablets of stone, that can be broken, with the new covenant the law will be written on the heart, by the Holy spirit, when we accept Jesus. People will not need to remember, and be taught, a whole long list of commands since the 2 commands that cover all will be placed into all believers.
