October 26/Hebrews 9

Verses 1-5 > Under the Old Covenant in the place of worship the furniture was arranged in a certain way, the priests had to dress in a specified way,  and the sacrifice had to be done according to certain specifications. Today worship takes place anywhere in different settings, different forms of dress, and with different orders of worship. We can come to Hilltop with casual dress or people can dress up. We have a plain looking sanctuary with not a lot of added furniture and the focus is not on the various pieces of furniture but on Jesus! We choose to have communion every Sunday and there are many other places that don’t. Our pastors dress casual and in other places they don’t. The point is that under the New Covenant we have the freedom to worship our Lord as we are led by the Holy Spirit. Not one way is more spiritual than another. In this way we can reach each culture in our world and  around the world for Jesus; always having the focus on him and not some ritual.

Verses 6-7 > the place of worship was not accessible to all the people only the priests. Now we all take part!

Verse 8 > the place of worship was temporary; however we have access to God at any time for all time and at any hour of the day!

Verses 9-10 > their ministry was external it couldn’t change the heart or cleanse the conscience.

Verses 11-15 > the ministry of Jesus to us is from heaven not earth. It purifies us internally and sets us free from the penalty of our sins! And all the promises of God are ours through Christ Jesus because of his obedience not ours.

Verses 16-23 > Sin is serious. Sin destroys everything it touches. It took the shed blood of Jesus to forgive our sins and restore what sin has destroyed. Relationships are restored through forgiveness. Forgiveness restores families, cities, states and nations. Animal blood couldn’t do that. Forgiveness only comes through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

Verses 24-26 > Christ’s one time sacrifice is good for all eternity. It never has to be repeated. If you have received Jesus as Lord and Savior your sins are cleansed once and for all; Past, present and future! Jesus will never have to come down from heaven and do it again.

Verses 27-28 > these verses implode the theory of reincarnation. There is no reincarnation. We die once and don’t come back as someone or something else. And there is not second chance for salvation.

Matthew 12:42 (NLT) — 42 The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen.

The Queen of Sheba comes back at judgment day as the Queen of Sheba not someone else!
Matthew 17:1–3 (NLT) — 1 Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. 2 As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.
Moses and Elijah appeared as Moses and Elijah!
The New Covenant is indeed greater. Our sanctuary is in heaven. Our Father and Savior Jesus are in heaven. Our citizenship and treasure are in heaven. Our hope is in heaven. We eagerly look forward to Jesus coming back so that we also may be in heaven!

  1. Mark Gundersen says

Actually the incense altar was in the Holy place just on the other side of the most holy place. Since incense is connected with prayer then you enter the presence of God by way of prayer.
