December 1/Revelation 1

Verses 1-2 > It goes without saying that communication is so very important in a marriage relationship. We are the bride of Christ and he is now communicating to us how life on earth as we know it will come to an end. He will communicate to us how important it will be to be a faithful bride and not pull back from living for him. He will show us what is going on behind the scenes in the unseen world. God is always behind the scenes working to bring about his will. John is faithful to report these things to us and we should be faithful to report what we know to others. We must communicate Jesus to those who don’t know him because their very lives will depend on how they respond to Jesus.

John 3:16 (NLT) — 16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Verse 3 > listening to the words of scripture alone will not bring the blessings of the Lord; it must be mixed with obedience.

Verses 4-6 > no other king has raised from the dead except King Jesus. He truly is the King of Kings. He is the only one who can free us from our sins. Will you bow your life to him and show your allegiance by your obedience? Are you a part of the Royal Family?

Mark 3:35 (NLT) — 35 Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Verses 7-8 > There is no beginning and no end to this King of ours! He always has been and always will be. This King of our will reign forever. And it will be reign of love, joy and peace. I can’t wait for Jesus to come back.

1 John 3:2–3 (NLT) — 2 Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. 3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.

Verse 9 > we might suffer, we might be isolated from friends and family for speaking about our allegiance to Jesus. God isn’t safe but he is just and in the end we will be rewarded.

But all the endeavours of men, all the emperor’s largesse and the propitiation of the gods, did not suffice to allay the scandal or banish the belief that the fire had been ordered. And so, to get rid of this rumour, Nero set up as the culprits and punished with the utmost refinement of cruelty a class hated for their abominations, who are commonly called Christians…. Besides being put to death they were made to serve as objects of amusement, they were clad in the hides of beasts and torn to death by dogs; others were crucified, others set on fire to serve to illuminate the night when daylight failed….’ Tacitus, the Roman historian after the fire of Rome, AD 64

Verse 10 > O how I wish everyone in the world could say, “It was the Lord’s day and I was worshiping in the spirit.” I fear that the world is in the shape it is because too many people are saying, “It was the Lord’s day and I was shopping or sleeping, or hunting, or golfing, or…  Because John honored the Lord’s day we have this revelation. How much personal revelation have people missed out on because are not honoring the Lord’s day?

Hebrews 10:25 (NLT) — 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Verse 11 > because John listened and obeyed we are blessed with this word today.

Verse 12-16 > before John receives this revelation Jesus shows up. John should recognize him because he saw Jesus like this on the Mount of Transfiguration in Matthew 17. This is the same Jesus who said that he would never leave us or forsake us; the one who would always be with us even to the end of the age. And here he appears to John to let him know that he has always been with John; he was just behind the scenes working everything out for good! Yes even John being on the lonely island of Patmos. The sword in his mouth indicates that no one can defeat or alter the words of Jesus. Things will happen just like he says. For us today we must believe that no darkness can overcome the brilliance of Jesus and yes He is behind the scenes arranging all things so they will work out as he has planned and not as we would plan.

Jonah 1:17 (NLT) — 17 Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.

This isn’t exactly what Jonah had in mind but God knew best back then and he know what is best for us now.

Verses 17-20 > Jesus is reminding us that there is no need to fear what is ahead because he has everything under control. Jesus holds the keys to the future. Jesus is the Christians future! Whoever has the keys has the victory!

  1. Mark Gundersen says:

This Revelation was written to the seven church’s in Asia. They probably were the churches that John had closest contact with and we’re also probably the center of the church during this period of time.
