November 21/1John 1

Many people want to make up their own idea of God. They also want to create their own style of living. So in a sense they want to be their own gods and they put forth their ideas as truth. John addresses these types of people.

Verses 1-2 > John  is saying that what he is about to say isn’t something he or the other followers of Jesus made up. He says > we’ve seen God! As unbelievable as this may sound God became a man and we’ve touched him. We’ve heard him. We’ve hung out with him for 3 years. He is the very life itself. We’ve seen him raise the dead. We’ve seen him come back from the dead! This Jesus is the real deal. No one but God could do the things he did. No one but God could know all the things he knows. He knew what we were thinking as we were thinking it! He really is the way to eternal life.

Verses 3-4 > I am telling these things so that you can have the same fellowship with Jesus that we had. So that you to can have eternal life. So that you can also have fellowship with us as we live for Jesus. We want you to experience the same joy that we have in knowing God the Father and God the Son. We want you to join us in our journey with Jesus which will lead us out of this world into the eternal world beyond this life. I am writing this letter so that you will once and for all know the truth about life and its purpose. I am writing most of all so that you will know the truth about God and the lifestyle he wants you to live. And believe me it is nothing that we would have ever thought to make up.

Verse 5 > John is saying I am just telling what Jesus said to me. There is no sin in God. There is no selfishness in God. There is no ulterior motive in God. There is no dark side to God. There is not even a hint of a shadow in God. He is purer than pure. He is whiter than white. He is so brilliant that the sun would look like a lump of coal in comparison!

Verse 6 > John is saying If you don’t believe me look at my lifestyle since I have been in fellowship with God. I sin less and less, me selfishness has diminished, my love for others has increased, my conscience is clear and I have and abundance of faith, hope, and love. My lifestyle has totally changed since I met Jesus. You know I am not lying because I do not practice sinning.

If you have given your life to Jesus you can say the same things as John as just said.

Verse 7 >  If we have yielded our lives to Jesus than his blood is perpetually cleansing us of sin. Our sin past, present and future is forgiven and wiped out by the blood of Jesus. Sin cannot stick to us.

Verse 8 > Those who create their own gods and their own lifestyle don’t believe they have sinned. Their standards are way to too low. John says that they are wrong.

Romans 3:23 (NLT) — 23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Verse 9 > God is faithful. He is always there to forgive sin. And only he can forgive sin. We must confess that we are sinners and come and receive his forgiveness.

Verse 10 > See romans 3:23 above. I wouldn’t want to call God a liar; but that is exactly what a person is doing if they don’t come to Jesus for forgiveness.

God became man and that man was Jesus!

  1. Mark Gundersen says

In John light means love and fellowship. To live in the light is to have fellowship with God and man. To live in darkness is to not have that fellowship and to try to be totally self sufficient.
