December 6/Revelation 4

Verse 1 > to those who open their hearts to Jesus here on earth, Jesus will open the door to heaven for them. The voice sounded like a trumpet blast because it needed to get John’s attention. John don’t miss what I am about to show you because it will steady your nerves for all you are about to see. After this = after the church age has run its course. The Church maybe taken to heaven before all this happens. The reason I think it might because in the first three chapters of Revelation the word ‘church’ appears about 19 times. From chapter 4 on I don’t believe it appears again.

Verse 2 > John saw the Throne. This is what would calm him for all that he was about to see and this is what should calm us as we go through this life. God is on the Throne. Heaven always rules. Satan could not pull God off the Throne. All the past empires and dictatorships could not pull God off the Throne. He is King of the Hill! The word ‘someone’ indicates that the Throne is personable and that person is Jesus our great High Priest who knows exactly what we are going through and will give us grace and mercy to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:14–16 (NLT) — 14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Verse 3 > The Throne has precious stones and who could be more precious to us than our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The rainbow speaks of grace in that God would not flood the earth again. No matter what we go through Jesus gives the grace we need.

Verse 4 > The Throne speaks of authority. The thrones of the tribes of Israel and the twelve disciples are around God’s throne. Jesus has given us all the authority he had when he walked this earth. Nothing stands up against the authority of Jesus.

Matthew 28:18–20 (NLT) — 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Verse 5 > The Throne speaks of Justice. The lightning and thunder indicate that God is about to bring justice to all those who have disobeyed him. When he gave Moses the Ten Commandments lightning and thunder came from heaven. We can rest assured that evil will not win. Those whose sins are not covered by the blood of Jesus will be judged.

Romans 12:19 (NLT) — 19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.

Verse 6 > The Throne speaks of peace. The sea was like glass. Nothing shakes God and nothing should shake us. Jesus has given us his peace.

John 14:27 (NLT) — 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Philippians 4:6–7 (NLT) — 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Verses 7-8 > The Throne is a picture of help, rescue and purity. In Ezekiel 1 & 10 we are told that these creatures are cherubim. They are angels that Jesus sends to help us who are being saved. The lion = Jesus the King. The ox = Jesus the servant. The human face = Jesus the Son of man. The eagle = Jesus the Son of God who soars higher and is above anyone else. The eyes and the wings mean that they see all and can appear anywhere needed. Remember in Acts 12 the angel that helped get Peter out of prison?

They sing Holy because there is no evil or trickery in our God. He will do as he says and so we can rest assured the we are saved!

Hebrews 1:14 (NLT) — 14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.

Verses 9-10 > The Throne speaks of submission and one day every knee will bow before Jesus.

Romans 14:11 (NLT) — 11 For the Scriptures say, “ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance praise to God.’ ”

Verse 11 > The Throne speaks of confidence. God created what he pleased. This means that he wanted us. We were no accidents or mistakes.

Praise God for his Throne. If Jesus is your friend, your Lord and Savior you do not have to be afraid of the future! And this is what he wanted John and us to see right off the bat.

The 24 elders were given authority in heaven but laid their authority at the feet of God who has ultimate authority.
