Romans 6:23 (NLT) — 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Mary Anne must have read my mind for what I was going to say in my blog today. I was in a store the other day and they were offering a free $50 gift card if I would sign up for their in store credit card. I guess it really wasn’t free and the old saying of, there is no such thing as a free lunch, is probably true. Usually if something seems to be free there is a catch to it. The catch might be just to get you into their store so that you will buy something. The other night I got a large pepperoni pizza with double the pepperoni from Casey’s. And because I bought a large pizza a two liter pop of my choice was, yep free! Once I bought two candy bars and the third one was FREE! Well that is our world and our economy for you.

God however operates in His world called the kingdom of God and under his economy which truly does include free. God gave Jesus to us freely. We didn’t have to promise to go to church two times and get Jesus on the third time. We didn’t have to help a large old lady across the street and then get Jesus thrown in for free. God gave us Jesus when we weren’t even looking for or asking for him. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins in fact for everybody’s sins whether we wanted him to or not; and he did it freely. We didn’t have to promise him anything in return for him to go to the cross. He holds out eternal life for us as a free gift. We don’t have to open up a heavenly checking account to get it. As Mary Anne said yesterday we just have to accept it.

John 1:12–13 (NLT) — 12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

This wasn’t our plan it was God’s plan and it is free. But not only is salvation from sin free, Jesus gives us his Holy Spirit free, to live in us and to help us to live our lives for Jesus. There are about 1800 promises in the bible that are ours, free. The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, and self-control, free. See Galatian 5:22-23. He makes us holy and righteous for free. He adopts us into his family for free. He pours out his grace and mercy on us for free. There is no earning in the life of a Christian. Christianity is free! Here is another list of free and as you will see David was thrilled with them.

Psalm 103 (NLT) —  1 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. 2 Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. 3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. 4 He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. 5 He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s! 6 The Lord gives righteousness and justice to all who are treated unfairly.

Even that faith that we placed in Jesus was given to us by the Lord and he drew us to place that faith in Jesus!

Ephesians 2:8 (NLT) — 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.

John 6:44 (NLT) — 44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.

In God’s world there is such a thing as a ‘free lunch’ I guess it is more like a free buffet. In fact there isn’t anything that we have that hasn’t come freely from the hand of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 4:7 (NLT) — 7 …What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift?

Seriously what do you have that God hasn’t given you?

Matthew 10:8 (NLT) — 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
