Romans 10:9 (NLT) — 9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Lets take a look at that word ‘believe’. The meaning of the this word in the New Testament means to have , faith in, trust in, rely on and rest upon. So if I believe that a chair will hold my weight the only way that I can show my belief is to sit in the chair. If I believe that the medicine will heal me I show my belief by taking the medicine as prescribed. If I say that I believe in Jesus I show that belief by obeying him, by trusting him with my life. The New Testament knows nothing of belief in Jesus without obedience.

John 3:36 (NLT) — 36 And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”

Mark 1:16–18 (NLT) — 16 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 17 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” 18 And they left their nets at once and followed him.

These guys believed in Jesus and they showed that belief by following him.

Luke 21:12 (NLT) — 12 “But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers.

The only reason we will be persecuted as Christians is because we show that we believe in Jesus by obeying him. If we wouldn’t obey him we wouldn’t be persecuted.

Romans 1:5 (NLT) — 5 Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name.

The only way to bring glory to Jesus is to have a belief that leads to obedience.

1 Timothy 6:11 (NLT) — 11 But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

A man of God or a woman of God is a believer in God. This belief leads to an obedient lifestyle.

Acts 6:7 (ESV) — 7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

James really says it best >

James 2:14–25 (NLT) — 14 What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? 15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? 17 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. 18 Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” 19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.

The demons tremble in terror because their belief doesn’t lead them to obey and they know what the consequences of that kind of belief is.

20 How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless? 21 Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. 23 And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. 24 So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. 25 Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road.
