Deuteronomy 6:6 (NLT) — 6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.

Today I am pondering the last word in our memory verse which is ‘today’:) The writer could have put a period after the word ‘you’ and stopped the sentence right there. Why add that little five letter word ‘today’? It is because today is all that matters. Today is the only time that we have. Yesterday is gone and we can’t change. Tomorrow is out of our reach because it isn’t here yet. Today we can change because today is within our reach. And what we do today will have a definite affect on tomorrow if it ever comes.

John Wooden was UCLA’s Hall of Fame basketball coach for many years. He won 10 National Championships in 12years with UCLA. John frequently exhorted his players to make each day their masterpiece. He said it like this:

“When I was teaching basketball, I urged my players to try their hardest to improve on that very day, to make that practice a masterpiece. Too often we get distracted by what is outside our control. You can’t do anything about yesterday. The door to the past has been shut and the key thrown away. You can do nothing about tomorrow. It is yet to come. However, tomorrow is in large part determined by what you do today. So make today a masterpiece…This rule is even more important in life than in basketball. You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.”

If I completely trust him today tomorrow I will have less anxiety. If I hide his word in my heart today I will sin less tomorrow. If I study his book of instruction today and meditate on it today tomorrow has a good chance of being prosperous and successful. If I save today I will have something for tomorrow. If I invest in my marriage and children today I will have a better family tomorrow. If I take time to know God today I will know him better tomorrow. If I get saved today my tomorrow is secure. If I eat healthy today my body will better off tomorrow. If I exercise today I will be stronger tomorrow. If I improve today in any area of my life tomorrow will be a much improved day. If I act today tomorrow won’t rule me.

God said to be wholeheartedly committed to his commands today because he knows good decisions today will give you a better tomorrow. He doesn’t guarantee that we will have a tomorrow but if we do it will be better.

Deuteronomy 11:26–27 (NLT) — 26 “Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! 27 You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today.

2 Corinthians 6:2 (NLT) — 2 For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

I like that “the right time is now, today”. Is there anything you need to do today?
