Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) — 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

The word exposes in this instance means to judge. The beauty of God’s word is that it judges us in the privacy of our own homes. It is something that is between us and God and not the whole world. God judges us not to condemn us, not to belittle us, not to embarrass us, not to shame us and put us down, but to restore us and build us up.

The news media exposed Bill Cosby for inappropriate sex. Now we all know about it. Recently Bill O’Reilly was exposed for bullying women that he had on his show. Well we all know about it and his show is done. I am not condoning their behavior and because they were unwilling to repent perhaps they should have been exposed. Many well known Christian leaders have been exposed for inappropriate conduct. I am sure that God’s word first exposed them and then when they were unwilling to repent it was allowed to go public.

This should make us appreciate God’s word so much. It exposes us privately and give us the chance to repent of things that we shouldn’t be doing. Our God is so gracious and merciful. His nature is so unlike human nature which relishes the idea of exposing someone. Remember that Jesus didn’t condemn the women who was exposed for committing adultery > see John 8. He didn’t excuse the sin. He forgave the sin and later on the cross he was exposed publicly for all of our sins!

1 John 1:9 (NLT) — 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
