Here is our new Memory Verse for the week:

Psalm 119:11 (NLT) — 11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

As you read this verse you will see that the psalmist has great respect and reverence for God. He wants to honor God with his life. He is full of the fear of the Lord which basically means that when his will and God’s will clash he will yield his will to the Lord. He is taking responsibility for his own actions. We know this because he says, “I have hidden…that I might not sin…”

Too many people want to blame others for their wrong actions. Right away in the Garden of Eden Adam blamed his sin on Eve and Eve blamed her sin on the serpent. Many people excuse their actions because of the way they were raised, or because they were tired, or because their girlfriend dumped them, or because they got laid off from their job, or because someone took their parking space, or because… Your heart is where you make your decisions. The psalmist doesn’t want to dishonor God and so he is committed to saturating, marinating, drenching, soaking, pickling, steeping and simmering his mind(heart) in the word of God. He knows that the body goes where the mind has already been.

In last weeks memory verse we learned that memorizing and obeying the word of God would lead to us to prosper and be successful in all we do. That is good motivation for memorizing. However the psalmist’s motivation has nothing to do with personal gain. His motivation is simply that he doesn’t want to sin against God. What a wonderful motivator. I pray that I will be so in love with Father God that my motivation for memorizing and obeying will be that I don’t want to sin against God. I pray that that will be your motivation too. Joseph had that kind of love for Father God:

Genesis 39:9 (NLT) — 9 No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”
