Psalm 119:11 (NLT) — 11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

I have talked to a lot of people who have exercise equipment in their homes only to find out that they are not using them for exercise. They are being used to collect dust, hang clothes on,  to form a New Year’s Resolution, and make good conversation starters. Having exercise equipment does a person’s body no good unless that equipment is being used by the person’s body!

Many people also have bibles in their homes. Bibles are good for filling in book shelves, looking great on a coffee table, and collecting dust. I have heard of some people who have even cut out the inside of a bible and use it to hide away some extra cash, knowing that nobody is likely to touch the bible. However useful the bible might be in the above described instances it does a person no good when it comes to handling everyday life. It does a person no good unless it is to be used as God intended it to be used. This leads us back to our memory verse from last week >

2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT) — 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

and our memory verse for this week >

Psalm 119:11 (NLT) — 11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

We are to open our bibles and take in the alive word of God, memorize it, repeat it over and over until we understand it, obey it and let it do its work in our lives. By repeating this day after day, month after month and year after year we will find that we are able to handle life quite well. It is just like using an exercise machine over and over day after day after day and one day you look in the mirror and your shape has changed!

Using God’s word will eventually change you. You will find yourself sinning less and less. You will come to be more like Jesus in character and attitude because the same word that worked in him will be working in you. These things don’t happen over night so we must persevere and stick with it.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NLT) — 13 Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.

Continue on with the word. Don’t give up and the word will continue to work in you. Do you believe this? We don’t want to end up like this guy in Proverbs:

Proverbs 5:12–13 (NLT) — 12 You will say, “How I hated discipline! If only I had not ignored all the warnings! 13 Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers? Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?
