1 John 5:11 (NLT) — 11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

Life is in Jesus. Remember we were spiritually dead before we received Jesus. Spiritually dead people have no freedom. We were slaves to Satan and our sinful nature. Double slaves!

Ephesians 2:1–3 (NLT) — 1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

We were controlled by the desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. We thought we were free but we were slaves. Because of Jesus we now have the freedom to love unconditionally. We have the freedom to not let other people’s actions control our attitudes. We have the freedom to say ‘no’ to our will and ‘yes’ to God’s will. This eternal life freedom begins the day we trust in Jesus. Now we are free to trust Jesus with everything.

This is how believers in China view this freedom of eternal life in Jesus. This story is taken from “The Insanity of God”, pages 262-263.

The security police regularly harass a believer who owns the property where a house-church meets. The police say, “You have got to stop these meetings! If you do not stop these meetings, we will confiscate your house, and we will throw you out into the street.”

Then the property owner will probably respond, “Do you want my house? Do you want my farm? Well, if you do, then you need to talk to Jesus because I gave this property to Him.”

The security police will not know what to make of that answer. So they will say, “We don’t have any way to get to Jesus, but we can certainly get to you! When we take you property, you and you family will have nowhere to live!”

And the house-church believers will declare, “Then we will be free to trust God for shelter as well as for our daily bread.”

“If you keep this up, we will beat you!” the persecutors will tell them.

“The we will be free to trust Jesus for healing.” the believers will respond.

“And then we will put you in prison!” the police will threaten.

“Then we will be free to preach the good news of Jesus to the captives, to set them free. We will be free to plant churches in prison.”

“If you try to do that, we will kill you!” the police will say.

“Then we will be free to go to heaven and be with Jesus forever.”

Hilltop do you now see what true freedom eternal life gives us? This freedom is a huge threat to the enemy. He no longer has control over us.
