1 John 5:12 (NLT) — 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.

In the early years of the ‘Old West’ ranchers branded their cattle with a certain mark so that everyone would know whose cattle they were. They did this because of ‘open ranges’ where everyone’s cattle grazed together. Then when it came time to round them up to take to market all they had to do was separated the cattle according to brand and there would be no mix up.

In our memory verse we find that God wants us to know that we are his children. Because we are his children we have several brands or characteristics that identify us as God’s children. And on judgement day the sheep > God’s children will be separated from the goats > the devil’s children. Let’s look at some of our identifying marks, or characteristics, or brands. I took all of them from 1 John. John wrote a lot about eternal life which we may look at tomorrow.

1 John 2:29 (NLT) — 29 Since we know that Christ is righteous, we also know that all who do what is right are God’s children.

1 John 3:9 (NLT) — 9 Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God.

1 John 3:14 (NLT) — 14 If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.

1 John 4:7 (NLT) — 7 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.

1 John 4:5 (NLT) — 5 Those people belong to this world, so they speak from the world’s viewpoint, and the world listens to them.

1 John 4:4 (NLT) — 4 But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Now if you have these birthmarks, characteristics or brands, you can say with confidence that you are a child of God!
When Sir James Simpson, the discoverer of chloroform, was on his deathbed, a friend asked him, “Sir, what are your speculations?”
Simpson replied: “Speculations! I have no speculations! ‘For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.’

We don’t have to speculate whether or not we are children of God. If you have God’s Son you have life. Perhaps you could share this blog with someone you know that has doubts about whether they are a child of God.

  1. There are many things we have whether unwanted stuff like in yesterday’s blog or just the basics for everyday living. However important nothing compares to having our Jesus! I liked the “empty van” verses being filled with grace and mercy analogy. I know the feeling of freedom from things you no longer want because we have worked all month cleaning out our storage unit. Very gratifying! But knowing that the life we have in Christ is all about being filled to the brim, having his characteristics, and identified as his child is the best feeling of freedom ever! Thank you Pastor Dan. I so appreciate your blog.
