John 14:3 (NLT) — 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.

Did you ever have the experience of anticipating going to summer bible camp? Your parents or parent would drop you off at the camp with the promise that they would pick you up at the end of the week. You were so excited that you said a hasty good bye with a light kiss on the cheek and off you went to join the other kids. The first day was great fun meeting new friends, putting your stuff on your bunk, and meeting your counselors. The second & third days were filled with games, swimming, crafts, eating and campfires. by the fourth and fifth days things were still ok but there was a little emptiness inside. The sixth day was so-so.

You began to realize that your suitcase didn’t have all the stuff in it like your closet at home. Your bunk was not near as comfortable as the bed you had at home and you couldn’t get away to your room and be alone like you could at home. You didn’t feel quite as safe at night as you did at home. The food although tasty was not nearly as good a mom’s home cooked meals. At home you could eat all you wanted to and go to the cupboards and refrigerator any time you wanted to. When you fell and skinned your knee mom wasn’t there to make it all better.

Camp wasn’t quite as exciting and as satisfying as you thought it was going to be. On  day seven you were actually looking forward to mom or dad coming to pick you up and take you Home!

We all would like this life to be comfortable, exciting and satisfying. And we do many things to make it that way; however it seems like it always comes up a little short of our expectations. That is because this isn’t Home. Peter says that we should live this life like we are just at camp. Its only temporary. No matter what we do it will never totally satisfy. He puts it this way:

1 Peter 1:17 (NLT) — 17 …So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.”

For those people who don’t live in reverent fear of the Lord, in other words they are not followers of Jesus; life here on earth is a good as it gets. But for those who live life in the fear of the Lord, in other words we are followers of Jesus; life here on earth is as bad as it gets.
