Our new memory verse for the week:

1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) — 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

You and I are not odd balls. Everybody will experience temptations in this life. Just because we are tempted does not mean that something is wrong with us or that we are less of a Christian. Paul is saying that if you live in this world you will face temptations.  It is not a sin to be tempted; if it were than even Jesus would have sinned which would mean that he couldn’t rescue us from sin because he would have been a sinner. No temptation in and of itself is not sin. It is only sin when we give in to it and Jesus never gave in. Aren’t you glad he didn’t?

There is a an old saying that goes like this, “To be fore warned is to be fore armed.” So if I was told a person was coming to rob my house at 3pm I would make sure that I was home and I probably would also be in the company of a policeman or two. I was fore warned and now I was ready. When I was in high school I had a couple of teachers who told us at the start of the year that they would be giving us ‘pop quizzes’. They wouldn’t tell us on what day the quizzes would be given but they did warn us that we would get them. That encouraged each of us students to make sure that we studied the material that we were given each day so that no matter when the quiz would come we would be ready.

So Paul is saying that temptations to sin will pop up from time to time. He is telling us this so that we can be ready to fend off the temptation and not give in to it. Even though I knew in high school that one day I would face a pop quiz sometimes I got lazy and didn’t study the material that was taught in class and when the quiz came I wasn’t ready. I think the same thing can happen to us in life. We know are going to be tempted but we get lazy or we get caught up with our every day responsibilities that we let our guard down and ‘pop’ there is the temptation and it gets us.

Ok now that you have had this reminder that you will face a temptation to sin what are you going to do about it? What are the temptations that have had success with you? How will you prepare yourself for them? Maybe it is a simple matter of not going certain places like a liquor store, a girlfriend’s apartment, a party, a computer screen, a magazine etc. It is like the guy who told his doctor that he broke his arm in two places. The doctor responded by saying, “Well, stop going to those places.”:)
