Hebrews 10:25 (NLT) — 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

those of you who are reading this blog would probably say that you are followers of Christ. I believe Jesus set the example for us to follow when it comes to meeting together.

Luke 4:16 (NLT) — 16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.

Most bible scholars agree the during the Babylonian Captivity of the Jews synagogues were set up so that the Jews could gather weekly for worship. Three things happened in those meetings: praise, prayer, and precept. The early church, made up almost entirely of Jewish people, met for the same purpose—praise, prayer, and the instruction of Scripture. Listen to what Robert Morgan has to say about meeting together:

We need a weekly countercultural experience to counter the culture we’re in. We must counteract the popular culture in our lives.

Most of our culture does not value praise to God, prayer to God, or the study of God’s word. And because of that they don’t honor God with there bodies or their time, talents and money. In fact our culture is obsessed with the human body and money which has led to all kinds of evilness in the area of pornography, sex trafficking, gender confusion, body piercing, tattooing, bulimia, anorexia,  bullying, suicide, drug abuse, marital infidelity, incest etc.

Our days are so full of busyness and pursuing happiness that by the time Sunday comes along many are simply too worn out to go to church. Our talents are used to invent more and better time saving devices so that the time we save can be spent on more busyness and more pursuing of happiness instead of coming up with creative ways to bring Jesus to people.

The celebration of Halloween is a good indication of the culture we live in. I mean they glorify Zombie’s, witches and spooks! Tonight they will be have a séance at the Spot in downtown Fergus Falls.

Sunday is like detoxing or like finding true north.Unless we weekly have a countercultural experience like Sunday worship where we use our time and resources to praise, pray and study the scriptures; we will get sucked into the culture around us. Did you ever think that Sunday worship could be that important? Most people don’t and that is why Sunday attendance across a America is at an all time low. The writer of Hebrews knew the importance of Sunday worship and hence our memory verse was written.

Romans 13:11–13 (NLT) — 11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. 13 Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy.
