Proverbs 15:1 (NLT) — 1 A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.

One good way to tell how far you have come in your Christian maturity is by monitoring what comes out of your mouth. But not only what comes out but how it comes out. Our memory verse talks about how to  respond in a situation where anger is present. It talks about the attitude of the person responding. The tone of voice that is used. The body language that is being portrayed and the inflection and the volume of the tone of voice.

There is also a proverb that says that death and life are in the power of the tongue. I really believe that this is true for our memory verse. Words can bring life or they can bring death. If someone is speaking angrily at you and you return the anger the conversation has no place to go but to get angrier. If I fight fire with fire it results in a bigger and hotter  fire.

The word ‘gentle’ gentle in our verse means to speak softly. When I encounter a hardness in someone’s voice I am to return softness. Hardness adds more hardness but soft takes the edge off. So the Lord might allow someone to speak with a hardness to me so that I can show my maturity with a soft response and a tone that speaks of caring and humility. In order to grow in softness I have to encounter hardness. The person that I am encountering will not know that I care about them if I fire back at them with hardened words.

If someone throws me rock hard words I throw back marshmallows. these marshmallows absorb the impact and deflect the force of the blow. A soft answer is like an airbag in a car. It shelter’s me and the other person from being damaged by the hard impact.

As you encounter rock hard words this week the number of marshmallows that you show will indicate how mature you have become. You will be protecting yourself from adding fuel to the fire and you will be showing the other person that you really do care. You could add a little chocolate, couple of graham crackers and the two of you can sit down and enjoy s’mores together:)
