Proverbs 1:7 (NLT) — 7 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

A building is only as good as its foundation. If the foundation is weak the building will be weak and subject to collapsing. Broken down dam in Fergus Falls is a good example of how a weak foundation caused the dam to collapse hence the name: Broken Down. Apparently when the dams foundation was being laid the engineers weren’t knowledgeable enough to know that they were build on top of a continually running spring of water. Eventually that water ate away at the ground that the dam’s foundation was built on and it collapsed.

From what I understand is that before women put on make-up they put on what is called foundation. This foundation covers up minor blemishes and wrinkles and then the make-up is put over it to make the lady absolutely beautiful. The foundation enhances the beauty. So to be truly beautiful you need some true knowledge and true knowledge says that you need a good foundation:)

If you want to build a life on true knowledge you need a good foundation and that foundation is: The fear of the Lord. This is where all of life should begin.

This doesn’t mean that you are afraid of him and run from him. It means that you have healthy respect for God and that when your will and his will meet you yield to his will. It means that you value the opinion of God over the opinion of man. Your life can be all about you, or all about others, or all about God. To have the fear of the Lord means that you vote to have your life be all about God; his ways and his will. In the Bible God revealed to us the way life was to be lived. The fear of the Lord will cause you to read God’s word and obey. Jesus had something to say about this.

Matthew 7:24–27 (NLT) — 24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

Jesus is saying that if you want a truly knowledgeable life you must listen to my word and obey it. The beginning of that truly knowledgeable life will begin when you fear the Lord. If you don’t fear the Lord you won’t listen to Jesus’ teachings and you won’t obey them. If you fear other people’s opinions more than you fear the Lord your life will not be built on a solid foundation and eventually it will collapse.

God told Noah to build an ark. At that point, Noah had a choice to make. He could either move in the fear of God or in the fear of man. He could have said, “I’m supposed to tell people that water is going to come down out of the sky? Water has never come down from the sky. People will laugh at me and perhaps even lock me up in mental institution. I’m supposed to build a huge boat miles away from any body of water? I’ll be the laughing stock of town. I’ll never hear the end of it” The fear of man could have caused Noah to be wiped out. Instead, he moved in the fear of God and for a hundred years, even as people mocked him, Noah obeyed the word of God. When the rain did indeed come down, Noah was kept safe because he chose to fear God rather than man. The fools, those who didn’t fear God, but instead despised the word of God  they drowned. Their lives were not built on a good foundation.

What happens when your will meets God? The outcome of that meeting will determine what kind of foundation your life has.
