Proverbs 1:7 (NLT) — 7 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

You fear God when you do not delay in obeying God.

Genesis 22:3 (NLT) — 3 The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about

God promised that through Isaac Abraham was going to become a great nation. But now God said to kill him. God said one thing but now he is saying something else. God just isn’t making sense. Has anybody ever been in a situation where God didn’t make sense?

Abraham had waited a long time for this son. He and Sarah were absolutely thrilled with this boy. When he was born emotions were at an all-time high! Abe was 100 and Sarah was 90 and now God said to kill him. It didn’t make sense. God we got all excited about this boy and now you want us to kill him. Are you just playing with us God?

What are people going to say when I kill my son, that’s what pagans do? What is this going to do to my family when I tell Sarah that I killed our son? None of this makes sense.

The real kicker was that this was supposed to be an act of worship! God said to go and sacrifice him as burnt offering. How can murder be an act of worship?

Galatians 2:20 (NLT) — 20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Why could God make this request of Abraham?

Genesis 21:4 (NLT) — 4 Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded.

Circumcision was a covenant sign of God that set apart his people from all the other people in the world. So when Abraham circumcised Isaac he was saying to God, “Isaac is yours.” God now says, “I’ll take him.”

Today when we dedicate or baptize our children we are saying to God, “They are yours.” When we get baptized we are saying to God, “I am yours.” Well if our children are God’s and we are God’s then he can do what he wants with us because he owns us. He can test our hearts to see if we really do fear him, if we really do take him seriously because he owns us.

1 Peter 1:18–19 (NLT) — 18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. 19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

Will you worship God when it hurts, when you don’t feel like it, when you don’t want to, when it doesn’t make sense, when others will make fun of you or question your sanity? If there was ever day to miss church this was the day!

Abraham wouldn’t miss this worship service because of how he perceived God. He held God in the highest regard. He put God’s opinion above his own. He gave honor to God’s position of being God. In his mind God is a great king! He did this while on the treadmill of stress! Remember we are living in the wilderness the place of testing before we get to the promised Heaven! God is saying, “Trust me, worship me, hold me in the highest regard, I am a great king!

Are you quick to obey what God has revealed to you in his word? If so then you probably Fear God.
