1 Corinthians 1:30 (NLT) — 30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.

This is the time of year when we all start getting Christmas cards. Some are generic store bought but some of them are more personalized. My youngest sister will usually send out a card with a picture of her with her husband Rick doing something like skiing and she will include pictures of her kids and their families, or just the kids and sometimes including the dogs.

It is a personal Christmas Card that makes you wish you were with them. It gives a bit more insight into their lives and helps to know them a little better and discover just a smidgen of what is important to them. It also makes me appreciate my sister because by taking the time to make the card and send it to me she was telling me that I was important to her. Personalizing does that.

In our memory verse God is in a sense sending us a personalized Christmas card. He is giving us a snapshot of what Jesus is to us. And by doing this Jesus becomes more personal. Let me explain. Our verse says that Jesus is wisdom. This would be godly wisdom not worldly wisdom. Where ever we see the word wisdom used in scripture, when it is not referring to worldly wisdom, we can substitute in the name of Jesus. When we do this we will get a greater appreciation for Jesus. We will have a better understanding of him and the words we are reading. And we will praise God for making Jesus wisdom. Okay so let’s substitute Jesus for wisdom and when it implies wisdom by referring to her as she in Proverbs 3:13-19.

Proverbs 3:13–19 (NLT) — 13 Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. 14 For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold. 15 Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. 16 She offers you long life in her right hand, and riches and honor in her left. 17 She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying. 18 Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly. 19 By wisdom the Lord founded the earth; by understanding he created the heavens.

Now let’s read it with the substitutions:

Proverbs 3:13–19 (NLT) — 13 Joyful is the person who finds Jesus, the one who gains understanding. 14 For Jesus is more profitable than silver, and Jesus’ wages are better than gold. 15 Jesus is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with Jesus. 16 Jesus offers you long life in His right hand, and riches and honor in His left. 17 Jesus will guide you down delightful paths; all Jesus’ ways are satisfying. 18 Jesus is a tree of life to those who embrace Jesus; happy are those who hold Jesus tightly. 19 By Jesus the Lord founded the earth; by understanding he created the heavens.

Did Jesus just become more personal to you? Do you appreciate knowing Jesus a little bit more? Does Jesus sound like someone you can bet your life on? Is there anything in this life that you need more than Jesus? Is Jesus enough?

How do we embrace Jesus and hold him tightly?

Proverbs 4:20–22 (NLT) — 20 My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. 21 Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, 22 for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.

Read through the Book of Proverbs and do this substitution and Jesus will become even more amazing and more personal to you.
