Genesis 23:16–20 (NLT) — 16 So Abraham agreed to Ephron’s price and paid the amount he had suggested—400 pieces of silver, weighed according to the market standard. The Hittite elders witnessed the transaction. 17 So Abraham bought the plot of land belonging to Ephron at Machpelah, near Mamre. This included the field itself, the cave that was in it, and all the surrounding trees. 18 It was transferred to Abraham as his permanent possession in the presence of the Hittite elders at the city gate. 19 Then Abraham buried his wife, Sarah, there in Canaan, in the cave of Machpelah, near Mamre (also called Hebron). 20 So the field and the cave were transferred from the Hittites to Abraham for use as a permanent burial place.

Abraham paid a price for a chunk of land which had a cave which Abraham was going to use to fill with the dead bodies of his family. Both he and Sarah are buried there along with Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Leah. Verse 20 says that is was going to be a permanent burial place. But wait is it really the end of line? Is that it? Do we die and then we are buried and that is the end of life. Some people believe that and so they live for every pleasure that they can find. They believe that when you die that’s it.

The book of Genesis ends with a full tomb but all four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John end with an empty tomb!

Just as Abraham paid a price to fill a tomb Jesus Christ paid a price to get the keys to empty it! The price was his life. And because of this everyone who has ever lived will one day stand before Jesus and give an account for how they lived their lives.

Revelation 1:18 (NLT) — 18 I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.

Revelation 20:13–15 (NLT) — 13 The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. 14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. 15 And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:1–8 (NLT) — 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” 5 And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” 6 And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. 7 All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children. 8 “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Abraham live by faith and he died by faith and because of his faith he has a wonderful future. If you live by faith in Jesus and die by faith in Jesus you will also have a wonderful future. All because Jesus emptied the tomb:) In fact in the new heaven and new earth one will never see a tomb or a cemetery because there will be no need for them. Thank you Jesus.

Our hope as Christians is in the resurrection of the dead. See Acts 23:6
