1 Corinthians 9:12 (NLT) — 12 If you support others who preach to you, shouldn’t we have an even greater right to be supported? But we have never used this right. We would rather put up with anything than be an obstacle to the Good News about Christ.

Some of the people in Corinth were questioning whether Paul was a real Apostle or not? And he said, ” you know I really do have the right to  be supported by you; after all I have seen Christ with my own eyes and he is the one who chose me to bring the Gospel to you. I have never taken money because I didn’t want you to think I was in it for the money and thereby give you an excuse not to accept Christ. In fact I would rather put up with anything than be an obstacle to the Good News about Christ.”

It is that last sentence that caught my eye > “I would rather put up with anything than be an obstacle to the Good News about Christ.” So I am thinking would I be willing to put up with and irritating neighbor and treat them kindly because I don’t want to be an obstacle to them accepting Jesus. Would I stay in an unloving marriage? Would I put up with an ungrateful boss? Would I control my tongue? Would I stifle my criticism? Would I continue to serve even when I was treated like a servant? Would I try to make life easier for unlovely people? Would I pay my bills on time? Would I treat the workers at Walmart with respect even though they seem act like I am bothering them when I ask where I can locate a certain item? Would I refrain from going to certain movies or drinking certain beverages?

What is it that I would be willing to put up with so that I wouldn’t be an obstacle to someone receiving Jesus? What is it that you are willing to put up with so that you wouldn’t be an obstacle to the Good News about Christ? In the last part of chapter 8 Paul says that he would never again eat meat if it would mean that he caused another believer to sin! Wow can you imagine going without bacon if eating it offended another believer with a weaker conscience:)

I think too often we do things or say things without thinking about how our actions or our words will effect how people will think about Jesus.

Holy Spirit help us to not to be obstacles to the Good News about Christ. Help us to mature in our faith. Help us to care about other people. Help us to think through things before we act or speak.

1 Corinthians 4:11–13 (NLT) — 11 Even now we go hungry and thirsty, and we don’t have enough clothes to keep warm. We are often beaten and have no home. 12 We work wearily with our own hands to earn our living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us. 13 We appeal gently when evil things are said about us. Yet we are treated like the world’s garbage, like everybody’s trash—right up to the present moment.
