Philippians 2:19–21 (NLT) — 19 If the Lord Jesus is willing, I hope to send Timothy to you soon for a visit. Then he can cheer me up by telling me how you are getting along. 20 I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare. 21 All the others care only for themselves and not for what matters to Jesus Christ.

While Paul is in prison in Rome he is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the church in Philippi. I like that about Paul. He is in a bad place and yet he is concerned about his brothers and sisters in Christ. Apparently he had asked some of the Christians in Rome, because he couldn’t text or email Philippi, if they would be willing to go and check on the Philippian Church but couldn’t find anyone who was concerned for them. In fact they just seemed to be concerned only for themselves.

So somehow Paul is able to get ahold of Timothy and Timothy, because he had the same genuine concern as Paul, was willing to make plans to go. You see the test of real Christianity is does what matters to Jesus matter me? And what matters to Jesus and has always mattered to him is our spiritual welfare. Before Jesus we were all spiritually dead and this concerned Jesus so he came an died for us so that we could become spiritually alive. In other words he dropped what he was doing and came to take care of us. Jesus didn’t consider us an inconvenience. Agape doesn’t know inconvenience.

I got a call from a man once who said that he was giving up on the church because nobody seemed to care about him and his family. Apparently a plea of help had been made to a few ‘church people’ but everyone except for one person was too busy to help. I told him that I didn’t realize they were having problems but now that he had called and made me aware of the situation I would be glad to help. Disaster averted.

Maybe people wouldn’t get to the ‘end of their rope’ so to speak if we would just check up on people once in awhile. This is where having fellowship with the Holy Spirit comes in. He knows what is going on with people and he can influence us to call, text, email or visit the person or family that he puts on our minds. After all if they matter to Jesus, and they do, then they ought to matter to us.

So perhaps you could ask the Holy Spirit whom you could contact with a, “Hey just wondering how you are doing and is there anything I can help you with or pray for?” Remember the old saying, ” People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Some people won’t make the first move to ask for help or prayer. That doesn’t make them bad people it just reminds us that we need to stay in touch.

I want what matters to Jesus to matter to me, You? By the way how are you doing and can I help or pray?

  1. Confession: when I have one of my nasty headaches it’s so hard to think of others because it’s so hard to even think…period! Paul had much, much more going on in prison than I will probably every experience in my lifetime YET his agape knew no inconvenience. What’s wrong with me in my time of pain that causes me to be so self-centered that I can’t pray for others? Maybe it’s not even a headache. Maybe it’s an uncontrollable chaotic day that takes my mind to another planet so far away that I cannot see the needs of others…out of sight out of mind. What’s wrong with me then? I admit that my intercession for others is more productive when all seems well with me. If Paul would have prayed only for others when all was well with him his letters would have been much shorter and we would not have his wonderful selfless example of agape that the Lord wanted us to have and to practice. As for how you can help or pray? I like to receive prayer requests but I don’t like to give my own requests to others. A form of (ugly) pride I suppose that causes me to miss out on a blessing from God:( With that said I would really like prayer for healing. I have acute pain in the knee area, it’s difficult to walk and I do not sit well. There, I did it! Now, how can I help or pray for you Pastor Dan or anyone reading the blog?

    • Daniel Mueller says:

Pray that I would know God and that I would see the world around me through the eyes of Agape. You have the Holy Spirit in you the same Holy Spirit that Jesus had. Jesus said that we would do the works that he did. And in Acts 10:38 it says that Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit and he went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the Devil. So put your hand on your knee and ask the same Holy Spirit to anoint you with the healing power he anointed Jesus with and then speak to your knee and say,” Jesus Christ heals you.” Believe and don’t give up.

I say to you right now like Peter said to Aeneas,” Peggy Jesus Christ heals you.”

Acts 9:34 (NLT) — 34 Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you! Get up, and roll up your sleeping mat!” And he was healed instantly.
