My dad used to always say to me, “Daniel you can never go wrong by giving.” I believe this is what the Holy Spirit is saying to us through Solomon in these next couple of verses.

Ecclesiastes 11:1 (NLT) — 1 Send your grain across the seas, and in time, profits will flow back to you.

Jesus said the same things many times partly because he knows that what ever we have is because God gave it to us in the first place. Giving is God’s DNA and if we are the body of Christ it is also our DNA.

Matthew 10:8 (NLT) — 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!

Luke 6:38 (NLT) — 38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

Proverbs 19:17 (NLT) — 17 If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord— and he will repay you!

With these above promises why would we not want to give? Why would we not look for opportunities to give? When you give you are giving you are also giving away your stinginess.

Ecclesiastes 11:2 (NLT) — 2 But divide your investments among many places, for you do not know what risks might lie ahead.

God considers giving an investment so find many people to give to!

Ecclesiastes 11:3 (NLT) — 3 When clouds are heavy, the rains come down. Whether a tree falls north or south, it stays where it falls.

Don’t let a bad day keep you from giving. Don’t be like a fallen tree that has no movement. Move and give!

Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT) — 4 Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.

If you are waiting for the perfect time to give, you won’t. If you are waiting for a convenient time or a time when you really feeling like giving or for that perfect opportunity to come along, you won’t give. Convenience, feeling good, and perfect opportunities rarely come and you will have found someplace else to spend your giving money. And you won’t experience a harvest because you haven’t planted anything.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 (NLT) — 5 Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.

Don’t say I will give when I totally understand why God would want us to. You will never understand so just obey and give.

Ecclesiastes 11:6 (NLT) — 6 Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you don’t know if profit will come from one activity or another—or maybe both.

Never give up  because you don’t know from which seed the harvest will come. Keep giving out the message of Jesus because you don’t know who will respond to the message. Giving is not only about money. Give of your time and you will harvest more time. Give of your expertise and you will get more expertise. Give of your talents and you will become even more talented. Give of your wisdom and you will become wiser.

Ecclesiastes 11:7 (NLT) — 7 Light is sweet; how pleasant to see a new day dawning.

It really is a privilege to be alive and give; so enjoy it. Give a smile and reap a pleasant day.

Ecclesiastes 11:8–9 (NLT) — 8 When people live to be very old, let them rejoice in every day of life. But let them also remember there will be many dark days. Everything still to come is meaningless. 9 Young people, it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do.

Solomon missed it here. The fact that we have to give an account to God makes life anything but meaning less. So keep obeying God, thank Him for his grace, repent when you blow it and the day for giving an account will not be a dark day for you.

Ecclesiastes 11:10 (NLT) — 10 So refuse to worry, and keep your body healthy. But remember that youth, with a whole life before you, is meaningless.

Prepare yourself for getting older. Take care of yourself now so you can still enjoy life when you get older. Youth doesn’t last it is meaning less or fleeting; goes by quickly. Worry takes its toll on the mind and the body. Give your worries to the Lord so you won’t be an old ‘worry wart’! Live in the will of God and enjoy his peace. Take care of yourself now so you can take care of yourself later!

Philemon 6 (NLT) — 6 And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ.

Let me say to you all what my father said to me, “You can never go wrong by giving.”

  1. Well done Pastor Dan. I really love how you can look into a verse and see so much! I pray that the Holy Spirit can open up my eyes, mind and heart to reveal God’s Word more clearly to me and also reveal any hindrances causing otherwise. I don’t want to miss anything God has to tell us in his Word…not one thing!

Mary Anne, I can see why you would be sad for Solomon. We can only learn from his sadness and hopefully make a difference in someone else’s life who is living in the world. Now that we’re done with Ecclesiastes, you can turn your mourning into dancing as we start Numbers! Now I think I’m sad. hehe
