Psalm 36:1 (NLT) — 1 Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all.

It is amazing that the human heart can be so tuned into sin that it can hear its whisper above the loud warnings of God. I guess that is what you would call selective hearing. As parents everyone of us has called a child to come and when they don’t come we go and ask why they didn’t come. The response we usually get is, “I didn’t hear you.” Ah but they heard the whisper to lie.

At a young age children must be taught to fear the Lord. Growing up I was told that one of the purposes of spanking was to “put the fear of God in me”. For me I always seemed to hear the voice of my parents better after a good spanking:) I guess that is a good definition of the ‘fear of the Lord’; to hear his voice and obey.

People today have no ‘fear of God’ to restrain them. We took the voice of God out of our schools(Ten Commandments) and now the majority of our children have grown up with no idea of what the voice of God sounds like. And even if they did know they would ignore it because after all if it was that important it would still be in our schools.

Our society has made it easy to sin because punishment is often delayed by long court cases, comfortable jails and light sentences. Very seldom does the punishment fit the crime anymore. A light slap on the hand does nothing to improve the hearing of the perpetrator. We as a society think that the solution to our problems is more education, more jobs, a higher minimum wage and better politicians.

Nobody seems to realize that we have only one major problem and it would be fixed by a good set of spiritual hearing aids!

Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (NLT) — 4 “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. 6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 8 Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Matthew 7:24 (NLT) — 24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.

John 5:24–25 (NLT) — 24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life. 25 “And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.
