1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NLT) — 13 Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.

When did the word of God begin to work in the lives of the Thessalonians? It worked in their lives when they received it and believed it. When Paul preached that faith in Jesus was the only way to have their sins forgiven and to give them right standing with God the Thessalonians believed that word and then that word caused them to turn from their idols to God. Faith gives the word permission and power to work in your life.

John 1:12 (NIV) — 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

The word of God will do you no good if it is not received and believed.

Hebrews 4:2 (NASB95) — 2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.

If a pill that is claimed to cure migraine headaches is given to you and you leave it on the table that pill will do you no good. It will only do you good when you receive and put it in your mouth and then believe it is the cure by swallowing it.

Paul said > Philippians 4:19 (NLT) — 19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

If you don’t receive this word and believe it, in other words staying calm, content and hopeful, this word will do you no good because your anxiousness and unrest will keep it from working.

Proverbs 22:6 (NLT) — 6 Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

Direct means to dedicate the child to the Lord and then morally train him to follow the Lord. It means to motivate your children to live for Jesus by the way you live and the way you treat and train them.

Again if this word isn’t received, in other words you don’t agree with it, and if it isn’t believed, in other words you don’t do the directing, this word will do you no good.

The conclusion? The word of God always works when it is activated by receiving and believing.

Hebrews 4:12–13 (NLT) — 12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
