Numbers 27:1–4 (NLT) — 1 One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad—Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph. 2 These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle. 3 “Our father died in the wilderness,” they said. “He was not among Korah’s followers, who rebelled against the Lord; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.”

Here we have a beautiful picture of the grace of God at work in the next generation. Apparently Zelophehad wasn’t a man of faith. It doesn’t look like he raised his daughters in the way of faith in God. I say this because he died in the wilderness because of his own sin. We don’t know how he died or of what he died. He could have choked on barbecue quail(num. 11:33). He could have been bitten by the fiery serpents and died(num.21:6). Maybe he sinned by having sex with a Moabite woman(num.25:9)Or perhaps he just died from the sin of unbelief like his whole generation did in their forty years in the wilderness. It doesn’t matter, what matters is that his daughters, even though they weren’t raised in a household that trusted God, trusted God.

Here is where the grace of God comes in. Even though the girls weren’t raised on faith or by faith, look at the faith in God that they exhibited by the following statement: “Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.” This statement tells me of the faith in God that they had. They were believing that God was going give them the Land that he had promised to their father’s generation. Israel hadn’t crossed the Jordan River yet. They hadn’t defeated any of the enemy yet. And yet by faith these girls were demanding land! O how wonderful is the grace of God!

A few things to note here because of the grace of God. Women can have just as much faith as men. There is the hope of salvation for those who have not grown up in a Christian home. Unwavering faith is what pleases the Lord and obtains His promises. The girls got their land along with husbands(num.36:10-12). Isn’t that just the way of the Lord to bless us exceedingly abundantly above all that we could think or ask:)

Let us all be encouraged to forge ahead in fearless faith regardless of what we see as obstacles in the way. We know that our inheritance in heaven is waiting for us because Jesus secured it with his blood.
