Hebrews 13:1 (NLT) — 1 Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters.

We keep on loving because we are the Church, the body of Christ. Jesus kept on loving us even though it meant severe punishment and suffering. As the Church we have been in infused with Jesus’ DNA by the Holy Spirit. So to not be loving would be to deny who we are.

We don’t do Christianity alone. Jesus didn’t come to be alone. The Holy Spirit has filled us with the love of Christ. This love needs an outlet to pour itself out on, otherwise it will grow stagnant, smelly and putrid,  like Lake Alice in Fergus Falls.

We are to pour out the love of Christ on other people. Christ never kept his love to himself. Neither are we to keep it to ourselves. We are to show kindness, consideration and benevolence. Loving others shows that we belong to God and have begun to know God. We are to stay on good terms with each other. We are not to let words or circumstances divide us. We are to be quick to apologize and sort out misunderstandings. Why? Because we are the Church!

Is it easy to show kindness to the unkind? No, but we do it because we are the Church!

Is it fun doing helpful things for people that are ungrateful and never seem to grow up? No, but we do it because we are the Church!

Is it always a blast to volunteer to do nursery duty, toddler teaching, greeting, ushering, snow shoveling, keeping the coffee bar going, making people feel welcome that we do not know, being genuinely friendly to newcomers, and being there on clean-up day? No, but we do it because we are the Church!

Is it always convenient to come to church on Sunday when the world around us is so good at scheduling other fun activities to do the night before and the day of? No, we do it because we are the Church!

During the week is it popular to live out the teachings of Jesus in every area of our lives? No, we do it because we are the Church!

1 John 4:7 (NLT) — 7 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.
