Psalm 117 (NLT) — 1 Praise the Lord, all you nations. Praise him, all you people of the earth. 2 For his unfailing love for us is powerful; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the Lord!

This is the shortest psalm in the bible but it has a long reach. No one and no nation is exempt from praising the Lord. No one has the right to have any other faith but the Lord the maker of heaven and earth. Any other faith or religion is in direct violation of the will of God.

If all people and all nations are to praise the Lord then they must hear about the Lord. Who are they going to hear about the Lord from? They are to hear from those of us who know the Lord and are already praising him. This short psalm reminds us of the long call on our lives to go an tell about Jesus.

Romans 10:13–15 (NLT) — 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

Our praise is part of our witness for Jesus. People should wonder why we are so upbeat in down beat situations and this wonder will enable us to tell them why. Praise is a powerful witness for the Lord and the lack of praise is equally as powerful and a non witness for the Lord.

Verse 2 lets us know why we can praise God at all times. The unfailing love of the Lord is what caused him to save us in the first place. There was nothing about us or in us that merited God saving us. As the scriptures say, our righteousness is like a filthy rag but unfailing love ignores our filth and reaches down and cleans us up and loves us for an eternity. The unfailing love of God towers over us, that is what powerful means. It overwhelms the odor and filth that sin had produced in our lives. It is like room deodorant for the whole world! His unfailing love is a breath of fresh air to all who will receive. And this fresh clean air lasts for an eternity because of the faithfulness of God.

So in response to God’s unfailing love towards us lets begin to see praise as a vital tool to witness for the Lord. A wonderful attitude is a great expression of the praise that resides in our hearts. The lack of grumbling and complaining is another expression of the praise in our hearts. A smile, an encouraging word, and a helping hand are also sweet expressions of the praise in our hearts.

Psalm 118:24 (NLT) — 24 This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 117 maybe the shortest psalm but its reach will be long when all of us heed its message.
