Joshua 12:8–24 (NLT) — 8 These are the kings Israel defeated: 9 The king of Jericho The king of Ai, near Bethel 10 The king of Jerusalem The king of Hebron 11 The king of Jarmuth The king of Lachish 12 The king of Eglon The king of Gezer 13 The king of Debir The king of Geder 14 The king of Hormah The king of Arad 15 The king of Libnah The king of Adullam 16 The king of Makkedah The king of Bethel 17 The king of Tappuah The king of Hepher 18 The king of Aphek The king of Lasharon 19 The king of Madon The king of Hazor 20 The king of Shimron-meron The king of Acshaph 21 The king of Taanach The king of Megiddo 22 The king of Kedesh The king of Jokneam in Carmel 23 The king of Dor in the town of Naphoth-dor The king of Goyim in Gilgal 24 The king of Tirzah. In all, thirty-one kings were defeated.

Last year my mother gave me an envelope that had amongst other things a clipping from a newspaper that she had cut out and saved. It was from the local newspaper in Queens, New York. I was in a play in 1st or second grade and the paper listed the name of the kids in the play. I was Mr. Milk in the play. If someone other than my mother were to have gotten ahold of that clipping today here in Fergus Falls the names would mean nothing them. They would have just thrown the clipping in the trash along with the rest of the garbage.

When I see the name of one of our Hilltop kids in the local paper I usually cut out the clipping and send it to them. You probably have done the same thing with people you know. It seems like it is special to have your name in the paper for some sort of accomplishment or achievement. But as time goes on people forget about what you have done and after 60 years, as was the case with me being in that play, my name in the paper just wasn’t a big deal.

But to have your name in the Bible now that is a big deal right? Well in our verses above their were a lot of kings who got their name in the Bible. But if you are like me you just scanned over those names and moved on. You didn’t know them or anything about them. They lived thousands of years ago and they got their names in the bible only because they had achieved LOSING! So I guess having your name in the Bible isn’t that big of a deal and certainly isn’t something to brag about.

There really is only one place that one should want to have their name written down and that is in the Book of Life. The names written there are not there because of any personal achievements or accomplishments. In fact all of the names in the Book of Life are names of LOSERS who became winners because of the achievements and accomplishments of Jesus! No one can brag about their name being in the Book of Life. It is only by the grace of Father God, the drawing of the Holy Spirit and the shed blood of Jesus that any one has a name in the Book of Life.

In this Book of Life we will be remembered for eternity by God and that is a Big Deal!

Revelation 21:26–27 (NLT) — 26 And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city. 27 Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
