Mark 12:9–12 (NLT) — 9 “What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do?” Jesus asked. “I’ll tell you—he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others. 10 Didn’t you ever read this in the Scriptures? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. 11 This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.’” 12 The religious leaders wanted to arrest Jesus because they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away.

In the story preceding these verses the landowner sent many of his servants to collect his share of the vineyard from those who were leasing it from him. All of the servants were either beaten or killed. Then he sends his son and they killed his son also. They  figured then that the vineyard would be theirs.

The world is the Lord’s and everything in it. (Psalm 24:1). The Lord has been faithful to send people to each generation to preach the gospel so that people would yield their lives to Jesus. This is God’s right because all creation including mankind is his. There are however those who do not want to belong to God and they will not listen to the message. All through the centuries people have been killed and persecuted because they brought the message that the Landowner wants to receive his due which is us people.

Many people do not want to be ruled by the Lord. They want the world and all that is in it for themselves so they refuse to hear the message. They mistakenly think that if the messengers are done away with or at least ignored that they will eventually get what they want. Perhaps they feel that they can wear God down so that he gives up and lets them have their way. In fact it looks like their plan might be working because things keep on going the way they have for years.

The religious leaders understood what Jesus was saying but because they had no fear of God they left to plot secretly how to get kill Jesus and end the threat to their lives once and for all. They mistook the patience of God for impotence > helplessness, the inability to take effective action. One day judgment will fall on those who have not reverenced His Son. That day will be a wonderful day for all those who have received the message and reverenced the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

That day for the rest of mankind, well… not so good:(

Our God is not helpless. He will vindicate all those who have given their lives to live for Him.

Matthew 10:28 (NLT) — 28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
