Psalm 78:59–61 (NLT) — 59 When God heard them, he was very angry, and he completely rejected Israel. 60 Then he abandoned his dwelling at Shiloh, the Tabernacle where he had lived among the people. 61 He allowed the Ark of his might to be captured; he surrendered his glory into enemy hands.

You have heard of people forcing themselves on others in the area of sexual harassment, abuse and rape. Their actions are not wanted so that take what they want by force. Well this Psalm is about Israel always turning away from God and refusing his loving advancement. God is not like us humans he doesn’t force himself on anyone. His presence departed from them when he let the Ark be captured by the Philistines. You can read about this in 1 Samuel 5. The Philistines put the Ark of God in the temple of their god Dagon.

1 Samuel 5:2–7 (NLT) — 2 They carried the Ark of God into the temple of Dagon and placed it beside an idol of Dagon. 3 But when the citizens of Ashdod went to see it the next morning, Dagon had fallen with his face to the ground in front of the Ark of the Lord! So they took Dagon and put him in his place again. 4 But the next morning the same thing happened—Dagon had fallen face down before the Ark of the Lord again. This time his head and hands had broken off and were lying in the doorway. Only the trunk of his body was left intact. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor anyone who enters the temple of Dagon in Ashdod will step on its threshold. 6 Then the Lord’s heavy hand struck the people of Ashdod and the nearby villages with a plague of tumors. 7 When the people realized what was happening, they cried out, “We can’t keep the Ark of the God of Israel here any longer! He is against us! We will all be destroyed along with Dagon, our god.”

The Philistines weren’t any more ready to receive God than the Israelites! The presence of God knocked over their God so instead of losing their faith in Dagon they just set him back up. The next day when all that was left of Dagon was a torso they still wouldn’t worship the true God in fact they considered the doorway where the head and hands of Dagon lay to be holy! The enemy sure is good about blinding people to the truth isn’t he?

Then when the weight of God fell on the people in the form of tumors all they could think about was getting rid of the Ark of God. God proves himself to be God and all people want to do is get rid of him.

John 3:19 (NLT) — 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

The Ark of God being allowed to be captured by the enemy is an Old Testament picture of the New Testament Jesus. God the Father so loved the World that He allowed Jesus to be captured by the enemy, Satan, on the cross so that he could knock him over, defeat and cripple him and free us from his clutches. God raised Jesus from the dead to prove that he is God and still people will not receive Him. Our world is sick with the deadly tumors of sin and still people will not turn to God and believe in Jesus. Instead they would rather send him down the road to someone else.

Things haven’t changed much over the years have they? People still refuse God and he still refuses to force himself on them. But take heart and don’t give up in your witnessing and praying because some will receive Jesus and when the dust settles our God will still be standing and so will we:)

1 Corinthians 15:58 (NLT) — 58 So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
