Yesterday after I had lunch with some dear friends at Big Chief I went for a motorcycle ride. As I rode through the countryside west of Fergus Falls I saw farmers being rewarded for the corn and soybeans that they had planted in the spring. They were out with their combines, tractors, trailers and trucks harvesting a good crop. In the spring they had chosen the field where each kernel of corn and soybean would be planted. They had chosen the exact kind of fertilizer and weed spray that was to be used so that with the right kind of weather they would be assured of a good crop.

Just like the farmer chooses the seed and the place to plant it to gain a good crop our scripture reading today in Hosea points out that the Lord also chooses us and plants us in what He considers to be just the right place that will have the right soil, fertilizer and weed spray so that He can harvest a crop of mature Christians.(Romans 8:29)

Hosea 2:23 (NLT) — 23 At that time I will plant a crop of Israelites and raise them for myself. I will show love to those I called ‘Not loved.’ And to those I called ‘Not my people,’ I will say, ‘Now you are my people.’ And they will reply, ‘You are our God!’ ”

The following verse in Isaiah also states that we are the planting of the Lord.

Isaiah 61:3 (NLT) — 3 To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.

The right soil is where ever we are living, working, playing, eating etc. The fertilizer and weed spray are the people that we come in contact with and the good and bad circumstances that we find ourselves in. We have been planted to grow to maturity and bring glory to God. If someone needs to hear about Jesus we have been planted to tell them. If someone if being obnoxious we have been planted to show patience and grace. If we find ourselves in a less than desirable circumstance we have been planted there to show forth the joy and wisdom of the Lord. If the checkout line is long we have been planted there to exude patience with a smile:)

If you are married you have been planted there to fulfill your vows till ‘death do us part’ and raise you children for Jesus. If you are a child in a family you have been planted there to obey your parents. If you have a job you have been planted there to do your work ‘as unto the Lord’. Where a situation is shaky and unstable you have been planted to bring stability. Where there is grumbling and complaining you have been put there to bring contentment and gratitude.

Take heart! Your life is not some random accident. Just like a farmer does not randomly pick a field to plant because he doesn’t want to waste his precious seed in soil where it won’t grow it’s best, God doesn’t just randomly drop you some where and expect you to make the best of it. No he picks the specific place for you to be planted. It is the place that has the best soil, fertilizer and weed killer for you to grow and give glory to Him. You are God’s precious seed! You are His Planting! It is from you that God will receive a Bumper Crop!

Isaiah 60:21 (NLT) — 21 All your people will be righteous. They will possess their land forever, for I will plant them there with my own hands in order to bring myself glory.

Exodus 15:17 (NLT) — 17 You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain— the place, O Lord, reserved for your own dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established.

Numbers 24:6 (NLT) — 6 They spread before me like palm groves, like gardens by the riverside. They are like tall trees planted by the Lord, like cedars beside the waters.

Jeremiah 24:6 (NLT) — 6 I will watch over and care for them, and I will bring them back here again. I will build them up and not tear them down. I will plant them and not uproot them.

John 15:1 (NLT) — 1 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener.
