Luke 12:37 (NLT) — 37 The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat!

Waiting in the verse does not imply sitting around doing nothing. It is a word of action. It means to stay awake, be alert and prepare. It is like when we hear on the news that the people on the east coast are waiting for the hurricane to hit land. Well if you watch the news videos you see people tying things down with ropes, boarding up windows, stocking up on food, water and other essentials, hooking up generators, putting animals in shelters etc. When the hurricane blows over they want to be left intact ready to live another day.

So as you wait for Jesus to return what have you done to ensure that your faith remains intact no matter what life throws at you? What have you done to ensure that your joy is tied down and doesn’t drift away? What preparations have been made so that you are not overwhelmed blown away with anxiety and worry? How have you guarded your heart so that you don’t give in to the waves of temptations of the enemy? Have you stored the word of God in your heart so that you don’t succumb to grumbling and complaining?

Mark 13:33 (NLT) — 33 And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!

Luke 21:36 (NLT) — 36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”

Ephesians 6:18 (NLT) — 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Colossians 4:2 (NLT) — 2 Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NLT) — 6 So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.

1 Peter 5:8 (NLT) — 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
