I am going to take a walk through Psalm 16 today:

Psalm 16:1 (NLT) — 1 Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to you for refuge.

Lord I will always be loyal to you.

Psalm 16:2 (NLT) — 2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.”

Nobody is good apart from God. If we see anything good or anybody doing good it is God showing Himself. Most of the world misses God because they believe they are good in themselves. Goodness is out of the reach of most people because they haven’t reached for God.

Psalm 16:3 (NLT) — 3 The godly people in the land are my true heroes! I take pleasure in them!

Choose your friends and companions wisely. Godly people may not be the most popular people to hang out with but they will keep you out of trouble and save you from many heartaches. In fact when have you seen the headlines in the newspapers or on the internet honoring a person and considering them a hero because of their godliness? Fortunately they are very popular in the Kingdom of God. My parents never questioned what I was going to do as a teenager when I was hanging out with Curtis Johnson. He had the reputation for being godly.

Psalm 16:4 (NLT) — 4 Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods. I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood or even speak the names of their gods.

Without thinking at all people chase after things that bring emptiness and no life. By hanging out with good godly people the psalmist is kept from making impetuous decisions.

Psalm 16:5 (NLT) — 5 Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.

God holds me together as a cup holds liquid. God is my source of security and protection. God keeps me sane. He keeps me from going skitzo! You are all I need. The Lord controls my destiny.

Psalm 16:6 (NLT) — 6 The land you have given me is a pleasant land. What a wonderful inheritance!

The blessings you have given me are like a rich beautiful piece of land that I can roam about and enjoy.

Psalm 16:7 (NLT) — 7 I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me.

What better way to bless or praise the Lord than by being grateful for His guidance and His instruction. And then to close the day by meditating on His word.

Psalm 16:8 (NLT) — 8 I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

Practice the presence of the Lord. God is the best thing going do not let go of him. “The future is your friend when Jesus is your Lord”. Warren Wiersbe. Someone also said that we may not know what the future holds but we know who holds the future.

Psalm 16:9 (NLT) — 9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety.

Because of the evidence that I am special to God I am able to rest in less than restful times.

Psalm 16:10 (NLT) — 10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.

The Lord has too much invested in me to leave. His investment was Jesus. Because Jesus was raised from the dead so will I. Because Jesus went to heaven so will I. Because Jesus lives forever so will I. Jesus canceled my ticket to hell, it is no longer my destination. The blessings of knowing my Lord and being close to Him continue on for eternity. Life for the believer does not end at death. Death is only the beginning of life.

Psalm 16:11 (NLT) — 11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Not only does the Lord show me the way of life He does life with me! The way of life that Jesus showed to us was love and forgiveness.
Galatians 5:6 (NLT) — 6 For when we place our faith in Christ Jesus, there is no benefit in being circumcised or being uncircumcised. What is important is faith expressing itself in love.
Luke 23:34 (NLT) — 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
