They say in football that the best defense is a good offense. The longer the offense stays on the field the more tired the other teams defense will be and the more rested your defense will be. So what is the best way to defeat our enemy satan? Well he was disarmed at the cross by Jesus. So it makes our job a little bit easier. Our defense isn’t to rebuke him or holler at him or pray with a loud commanding voice. No, our best defense is to live righteously. That somehow puts a spiritual wall around us that the enemy cannot penetrate. It is when we are living un-righteously, not obeying the word of the Lord or loving the Lord that this invisible wall begins to collapse and it allows the enemy access to our lives. I know this because of what God said to Ezekiel:

Ezekiel 22:30 (NLT) — 30 “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.

Israel was living disobediently and the walls of righteousness had collapsed. God was looking for a person to stand between God and the people and pray that the people would begin to again live in obedience to God so that the walls could be rebuilt and the people not destroyed. Was it actually God that would destroy the people? No, he had said that it was their sin that would find them out.

Numbers 32:23 (NLT) — 23 But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the Lord, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.

All sin does is steal, kill and destroy. So James exhorts us to keep the walls of righteousness in good shape and then we will be in good spiritual shape.

James 4:7–8 (NLT) — 7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

Resist = to stand in the place of. We are to stand in the place of Jesus who was righteousness. He has passed on this righteousness to us. Stand = to live righteously. The enemy runs when he sees us standing because it reminds him of Jesus. He cannot penetrate the wall of righteousness. We come close to God when we are obeying God. Washing our hands means that we are living according to God’s word. We are purified by living out God’s word. The word is likened to water.

Ephesians 5:26 (NLT) — 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.

John 15:3 (NLT) — 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.

1 Peter 1:22 (NLT) — 22 You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.

Keeping the wall built will keep the enemy out.  This is one wall where we don’t have to ask Congress for the funds to build it!:) Go on the offense with righteousness and keep the enemy on the defense.
