Psalm 39:5 (NLT) — 5 You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.”

Have you ever had this thought, “Do I matter”, cross your mind? As we look around us and see all that is going on our lives can seem so small and insignificant. People fall into deep depression because they feel like they don’t matter and they have nothing to live for. According to my internet searching suicide has become the third leading cause of death among teens in America. Most teens who have been interviewed after a suicide attempt say that what causes teen suicide are feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. In other words they don’t believe that their life matters.

When I begin to think that I am insignificant and that I don’t matter, verse 5 becomes and anchor for me, it tells me that I do matter. Look at the first five words in this verse > You(God) have made my life. We are not here because of a random Big Bang. I guess that would make us insignificant. We are here because God is the author and the giver of life. No life happens unless God ordains it. In Genesis every time God created he said that it was good. So His creation must be good for something.

In Psalm 139 we are reminded that God formed and knit us together in our mother’s womb(vs:13). Why take the time to intricately form every detail of my body > height, weight, eye color, hair color, curly or straight and the number of hairs on my head, etc, if I don’t matter? Every day and every moment of my life was recorded by the Lord before it happened(vs:16). Why map out every day in my life knowing the good, the bad and the ugly choices I would make if I didn’t matter? In fact why would an infinite God who didn’t need me to make his life better, or happier or more fulfilled make me? I mean there were already millions of people in the world before me. It could only be because I matter. But there is one other thing that God did for me and you that proves we matter and it is found in another Psalm and also many other places in the Bible.

Psalm 71:23 (NLT) — 23 I will shout for joy and sing your praises, for you have ransomed me.

There should be no doubt in our minds that we matter because God ransomed us and the price was Jesus. The enemy, satan, had kidnapped us and God paid the ransom for us. Why would he do that if we didn’t matter?

You matter just because you were made in the image of God. Get the word out.
