I remember bringing some of the guys that I was considering for possible elders through a leadership course. The course described in detail the qualifications that the bible set forth for elders. Then there was a section on how to go about choosing men who had these qualifications. Just because they had the right qualifications didn’t necessarily mean that they should be chosen. Not everybody is a team player. The person teaching the course said that one good way to tell if a man might be a good fit for the pastor to work with was if you drove into the parking lot and saw his car parked there what is your initial reaction? Do you want to turn around and leave or does a smile come to your face because you enjoy being around the person?

I thought about this scenario when I read the following verse:

Psalm 21:6 (NLT) — 6 You have endowed him with eternal blessings and given him the joy of your presence.

David is talking about the Lord and enjoying His presence. When I read that I asked myself if I enjoyed the Lord’s presence. Am I glad to go through my day with Him by my side? Do I enjoy the Lord’s company? Am I at ease and can I be my laughing, joking, semi-serious self with Him. Do I practice His presence? Am I aware that He is always there? Do I enjoy conversing with Him when I am out shooting or riding on my motorcycle? Does His presence spur me on to be on the lookout for doing good?

I can honestly say that I do enjoy the Lord’s presence. I enjoy having conversation with Him. I enjoy when He leads me to pray His word or when He gives me new insight into His word. I love it when he brings to my attention an illustration that I can use in a message or on my blog > as I am doing right now.  I am thankful when He warns me of danger or checks me in my spirit when I am about to let my emotions get away from me. I appreciate when he nudges me to text, call or visit someone who needs a good word at the moment or who just needs someone to be there. I like it when He gives me ideas of something special that I can do for Cleo.

It is great to be around someone who loves me dearly, doesn’t condemn me, is extremely patient and long suffering with me, speaks the truth in love, doesn’t let me get away with stuff and believes that I am a masterpiece!

If I drove into the church parking lot and saw the Lord’s car parked there I would be absolutely thrilled. 🙂

Psalm 92:4 (NLT) — 4 You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done.
