Proverbs 26:1 (NLT) — 1 Honor is no more associated with fools than snow with summer or rain with harvest.

There are things that just don’t go well together. Snow is good but it doesn’t go well with summer but it does go well with winter. Rain is a good thing but it doesn’t go well with harvest but it does go well while the crop is still growing. Honor is a good thing but it doesn’t go well to honor a fool. If we honor a fool that just encourages them to do more foolish things.

Actors and actresses honor themselves all the time with Emmy’s and Oscar’s. That honoring of themselves has led many to believe that they are now experts in other arenas of life. Many of them speak out for abortion, woman take their clothes off for the organization called PETA > people for the ethical treatment of animals, for socialism, gun control, global warming and climate change. They believe that their voices should be heard because after all they were honored with an Oscar for their acting. If you listen to most of them talk about the above issues they just come across as fools. I love Harrison Ford as an actor but he showed himself to be a fool when he called climate change, and I quote, “The greatest moral crisis of our time.”

Proverbs 26:2 (NLT) — 2 Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.

In the early 70’s I was dating a girl of Spanish descent. After a few months I could tell that she wasn’t the girl for me so I broke it off. Well I came to find out later that her mother had put a curse on me. This verse in Proverbs came into play. If you happen to walk by a place where sparrows or swallows have their nests you find them swooping down at your head to drive you away from their nesting area. They don’t land on you they just act like they are going to. We don’t deserve to be hit by them because we aren’t going after their nests. I didn’t deserve the girls mother’s curse because I had no intention of hurting her daughter. She just wasn’t right for me. The Lord will keep an undeserved curse from landing on you. Remember what Balaam said when Balak asked him to curse Israel > But how can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I condemn those whom the Lord has not condemned?( Numbers 23:8)

Proverbs 26:3 (NLT) — 3 Guide a horse with a whip, a donkey with a bridle, and a fool with a rod to his back!

Here the fool is compared to an animal. You can’t reason with it so you have to use force to control and make it do what you want it to do. You also can’t reason with a fool. You can’t reason with the foolish people in our government that want to replace democracy with socialism. Even though it hasn’t worked in any other country, Venezuala being the latest casualty of socialism, the still argue for it. O if we could only bring back the rod:) I like what Psalm 32:9 says,Do not be like a senseless horse or mule that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control.” Fools just don’t have any sense. Sometimes force is the only language a fool with understand.

Proverbs 26:4 (NLT) — 4 Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools, or you will become as foolish as they are.

Be careful how you answer a fool so that you don’t become a fool in the process. In other words don’t lose your cool, don’t be rude or sarcastic or use profanity, don’t raise your voice, don’t come across like you are perfect and know it all. Don’t be speak back condescendingly. And sometimes it is best to remain silent and just walk away.

Proverbs 26:5 (NLT) — 5 Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools, or they will become wise in their own estimation.

The fool needs to be reproved, or corrected or rebuked as his or her folly deserves so that they will not continue to be wise in their own eyes. Just do it in a way that doesn’t demean the fool, doesn’t bring you down and always maintain the honor of God. As you read the Gospels you will see that Jesus was a master at this. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” His reply completely amazed them.Mark 12:17 (NLT) Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom.
