Psalm 73:23–24 (NLT) — 23 Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.

When I read the words ‘you hold my right hand’ my mind flashed back to a time when I was four years old. I was walking with my mother back to our little trailer that we lived in while dad was going to seminary here in Fergus Falls. Suddenly it got dark, the wind really picked up and it started to rain. It was one of those driving rainstorms where in just a few minutes the street looked like rivers flowing with water. Well my mother grabbed me by the hand and we began to run. I think I was both terrified and excited at the same time. I mean what little guy walks around a water puddle and here we got to run it! The wind was really strong but mom’s grip on my hand was even stronger and we, although soaking wet, made it to the safety of our little trailer house.

My mom was holding my hand because I belonged to her. The psalmist here says the because we belong to the Lord he holds us by the right hand and guides us through this life to the glorious destiny he has waiting for us. Now obviously the Lord didn’t physically have a hold of his hand but to the psalmist it sure felt like he did. Why do you think he felt that way? Well to the psalmist obeying God’s word was like having God right there with him as he walked through this life. Isn’t that what he meant when he said, “You guide me with your counsel”?

God and his word are inseparable so if you are obeying his word you never have to go through life afraid. No matter what kind of storm you encounter as long as you are following God’s word he is with you. When a friend goes with you through a tough time they some times say, “I have your back”. God says, “I have your hand.”

Matthew 28:20 (NLT) — 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Hebrews 13:5 (NLT) — 5 Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”

Psalm 37:24 (NLT) — 24 Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.

Psalm 63:8 (NLT) — 8 I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.

Isaiah 41:10 (NLT) — 10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:13 (NLT) — 13 For I hold you by your right hand— I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.

2 Corinthians 4:9 (NLT) — 9 We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.
